Throughout the course of the NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships from March 8-10, select Indiana student-athletes will check in with IUHOOSIERS.com. Senior Heather Chapman's account from March 7 appears below.
PREPARE YOURSELF:
I am rooming with Christina (Loukas) in room 666 - yeah, I know. We were thinking about changing, but instead we covered every single thing in the room that had those numbers showing, even the phones. We put signs on the outside that clearly explained that it was the luckiest room ever. I think it really confused the maids, because our room was the last one to get cleaned, but even though we are in room 666, we "ain't scurred," if you will. Sometimes we think maybe they meant to put them the other way and we are just the niner room.
Anyway, we woke up today to "Any Way You Want It" by Journey at 7 a.m. because our practice was from 8-9 a.m. I came to the conclusion that swimmers are really messed up in the head, because no one in their right mind would get up before those hours to get into cold water and swim every morning of their college life - ha. But I am sure glad that the girls that are here do make the commitment, because I love them. We (the IU team) are having a really good time here in the frigid state of Minnesota. It is awesome having 13 people here.
Lindsay (Weigle) and I did 10-meter optionals, which was challenging because it is hard to get motivated to hurl myself off of 33 feet in the morning, but at least we had each other to make it a little better.
The divers came back and hung out for a few hours before we went back to practice again. I am sure (Indiana diving coach Jeff) Huber was pumping iron during this break and getting huge to show up the other coaches - we by far have the buffest coach. As for me and my roommate, Christina got medicine because she is sick and I watched "Tyra" on television. I hung out with Heather Bounds from Miami - she is a diver. I talked to my best buddy Jade Summerlin on the phone for a really long time and that was awesome. I talked to my boyfriend, Ty, and he always makes me laugh. Then we picked up our stuff from the NCAA, which this year is a sleeping bag, a hat, gloves, a keychain, and something else, but I forget. The sleeping bag is huge and I have no idea how they think people can get those home from Minnesota. Last year for NCAAs we got a cute little backpack and this year we get a king size sleeping back in a huge box.
Before the second practice Christina and I traded suits. She wore my favorite black adidas suit and I wore her lucky bright blue tower suit. We both dove really well at practice. She smoked some dives off three-meter and I smoked some dives off of 10-meter. We should probably swap suits for the meet!
After practice Christina and I actually took a shower and got a little dressed up and then the swimmers and divers met up and went to a Mediterranean restaurant for dinner and it was really good. It was a very healthy place and there was no wait, which was good with as many people as we have. I love eating with all of the girls because we have so much fun every night at dinner. It is a time that we can all get together, because during the days we are always practicing at different times.
Then Brittney (Feldman), Christina, the trainer Missy (Epstein), and I went to Target because it was necessary. Christina and I spent way too much on bikinis and food, which clearly don't go together. I also bought a new coloring book for tomorrow's competition and new crayons. I think I am more excited than I should be. On the way back from Target I got to know the shuttle driver. He was from Somalia. He was so funny. We were jammin' in the car and having a grand ole time. We told him not to hate us 'cause he ain't us. I have no idea what his name was but I told him I was going to be a famous white rapper so he'd better not forget me.
Christina and I are about to watch "Just Married," because it is my favorite movie ever and we feel like laughing so I seriously need to go. Huber always tells us he wants us to watch video so we just pretend that he means video like movies and not video like our diving - ha. (I hope he doesn't read this part - Huber if you are reading this, I am just kidding)
I really hope that you didn't get to the bottom of this and if you did, I am really sorry you had to read all of that :) but I hope your day was as good as mine!
Tomorrow is one-meter - wish us luck - wait, we don't believe in luck, good or bad. I mean, geez, we are in room 666, c'mon now!
