HOOSIER NOTES
After a two-week hiatus, Indiana will compete at the Big Ten Rowing Championships on Lake Wingra in Madison, Wis., on Saturday, April 28. The Hoosiers are seeded seventh in the varsity eight, second varsity eight and and novice eight, sixth in the varsity four and fifth in the second varsity four.
2006 BIG TENS
The Hoosiers took seventh as a team at the 2006 edition of the Big Ten Championships, compiling 34 points on the strength of the first novice eight's second-place finish. The runner-up showing was good for Indiana's first-ever Big Ten medal.
Madison Spruell (cox), Ashley Johnson (stroke), Kourtney Beckham, Jenn Maslanka, Jamie Spoto, Kiri Crane, Jessica Keller, Brittany Billingsley and Kelsey Kapral (bow) turned in a time of 7:15.1 in the grand final to take second behind Wisconsin.
IU's second varsity four took sixth, while the varsity eight, second varsity eight and first varsity four each placed seventh in their respective races.
Then-senior Laura Lazaridis took first team All-Big Ten honors, becoming the first three-time honoree in IU history.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana competed at the Big Ten Duals in Laingsburg, Mich., on April 14, falling to Michigan in the morning and host Michigan State in the afternoon.
The Hoosiers' second varsity four was the only IU crew to pick up a win on the day, as Stephanie Lindeman (cox), Stephanie Hamilton (stroke), Marla Alexander, Stephanie Horvath and Laura Fuhrmann (bow) topped Michigan State in the afternoon session. IU's V4B turned in a time of 8:44.57 in a strong headwind to top a pair of Spartan crews.
Indiana's varsity eight was defeated by a pair of ranked crews. Betsy Hibbard (cox), Jenn Maslanka (stroke), Jamie Spoto, Ashley Johnson, Laura Stebbins, Courtney Valerious, Kourtney Beckham, Kiri Crane and Kelsey Kapral (bow) were downed by then-No. 11 Michigan in the morning, and fell to then-No. 20 Michigan State in the afternoon.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Hoosiers dedicated the Dale England Rowing Center on March 24 after hosting Wisconsin. The facility includes a new locker room, a new team room, showers and restrooms. The dedication celebrates the completion of the first phase of the construction of the rowing center, which will eventually include new boat bays, a repair bay, coaches' offices, expanded storage and an erg room. Funding for the facility was donated by Dale England, father of former Indiana coxswain Becky England (2000-03).
UP NEXT
Indiana will continue its postseason at the Aramark NCAA South/Central Region Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn., on May 13.
