CARMEL, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team stands in eighth place with a total of 312 after the first day of the IU Invitational, held at Crooked Stick Golf Club. Freshman Kellye Belcher leads the Hoosiers with a four-over-par 76 to stand in a tie for 13th at the event, which was shortened to 36 holes due to frigid temperatures.
"We didn't play the way we are capable of," Indiana head coach Clint Wallman said. "On such a great golf course, it is easy to get intimidated. If we go out tomorrow, focus on playing our own game and execute, we will be just fine."
Following Belcher is junior Lauren Harling, who stands in a tie for 23rd after carding a 77 on Monday. Fellow junior Elaine Harris is tied for 30th after a first-round 78, while freshman Anita Gahir is tied for 54th with an 81. Freshman Laura Nochta is tied for 88th position after carding an 87 on the day.
Competing as individuals, sophomore Amber Lindgren and senior Kendal Hake are tied for 67th after turning in rounds of 82. Senior Gennifer Marrs, also playing as an individual, is tied for 85 after an 86 on Monday.
Michigan State leads the tournament with a total of 299 and is followed by Illinois in second place at 304. Texas stands in third place at 307, Michigan is fourth at 308, Notre Dame and Kentucky are tied for fifth with totals of 310, Northwestern is seventh at 311, Western Michigan stands in ninth with a total of 313 and Oregon rounds out the top-10 at 314. Seul Ki Park of Illinois stands on top of the individual leaderboard with an even-par 72. Sarah Windhan of Ball State also recorded a hole-in-one on the 135-yard 13th hole.
The tournament will conclude on Tuesday, April 10. A shotgun start will begin at 9:30 a.m. EDT.
