TEAM AWARDS
Indiana handed out its team awards at a banquet on Monday, May 7. The IU coaching staff doled out seven team awards on the evening, including the Team Sportsmanship Award, Most Dedicated Athlete, Most Valuable Rower, the Pumping Iron Award, the Academic Award, the Balfour/Hoosier Award and the Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award.
Senior Courtney Valerious picked up a pair of honors, as she was selected by her teammates as the Most Dedicated Athlete and was chosen by IU's strength and conditioning coaches as the recepient of the inaugural Pumping Iron Award.
Senior Rozzie McHenry took home the Team Sportsmansship Award, as selected by her teammates. Classmate Elaine Deppe won the inaugural Academic Award, which is selected by the academic support staff.
In a program first, the Most Valuable Rower award went not to an individual, but to the Class of 2010, which has shouldered a heavy load this season. Indiana has six freshmen in its second varsity eight, two in its varsity four and one in its second varsity four, as well as eight in the novice eight, prompting the coaching staff to select the entire class as most valuable to the team.
Sophomore Madison Spruell took the Balfour/Hoosier Award, given by the IU Department of Athletics to a student-athlete from each sport that has brought honor and disctinction to the university. Freshman Emily Kasavana won the Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award, given by the athletics department to a female student-athlete from each sport that has distinguished herself in athletics and academics and has displayed an outstanding mental attitude.
Head coach Steve Peterson also announced that five Hoosiers had earned CRCA Scholar Athlete status this season, Indiana's most in a single season in program history. Seniors Kourtney Beckham, Laura Stebbins and Stacey Young and sophomores Ashley Johnson and Spruell took the distinction. The award was the second of Young's career.
HOME SWEET HOME
The Hoosiers dedicated the Dale England Rowing Center on March 24 after hosting Wisconsin. The facility includes a new locker room, a new team room, showers and restrooms. The dedication celebrates the completion of the first phase of the construction of the rowing center, which will eventually include new boat bays, a repair bay, coaches' offices, expanded storage and an erg room. Funding for the facility was donated by Dale England, father of former Indiana coxswain Becky England (2000-03).
UP NEXT
Should the Hoosiers advance to the NCAA Championships, they would be back in Oak Ridge from May 25-27 for the national championship regatta.
