BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Junior Max Dean and the Indiana wrestling team have been honored by the National Wrestling Coaches Association for their academic accomplishments in the 2006-07 school year. Dean was named to the All-Academic Team for having the seventh-highest GPA among eligible wrestlers, while as a team the Hoosiers had the 29th-highest average and were fourth among Big Ten teams.
"We had a very good season on the mat; we are pleased that our efforts in the academic arena are being recognized as well," head coach Duane Goldman said. "Our wrestlers have been working hard to be complete student-athletes and it is nice that they have been successful. Further congratulations to Max Dean for his third time as an Academic All-American selection."
Dean earned NWCA All-Academic honors for the third time in three years, and earned Indiana's 11th selection to the squad. He finished his junior campaign 27-16, placing seventh at the Big Ten Championships and qualifying for NCAAs for the third time. A marketing operations management major, Dean was named Academic All-Big Ten for the third time earlier this year.
To be eligible for the academic honor, wrestlers must have at least a 3.2 GPA and have been an NCAA qualifier or have won 60 percent of their matches. Dean had the fifth-highest GPA among wrestlers who advanced to NCAAs, and his average was the highest of the nine individuals from the Big Ten to make the All-Academic Team.
Teams were rated based on 12 student-athletes - the 10 wrestlers who participated in the NCAA tournament qualifier and any two others who participated in at least one dual meet during the season. The Hoosiers were the fourth of five Big Ten teams to finish in the top 30, just ahead of Michigan State.
Duke took home the top spot among all teams, with Stanford and Brown close behind. Princeton and Northern Iowa rounded out the top five in the country. Northwestern led all Big Ten squads by placing ninth, while Penn State was 17th and Purdue was 20th. Missouri All-American Tyler McCormick posted the highest individual GPA, with North Dakota State's Jacob Bryce and Brown's Shawn Kitchener rounding out the top three of the 57 wrestlers who were honored.
