BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - A program-best five members of the Indiana rowing team have earned Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association National Scholar-Athlete distinction for the 2007 season, the CRCA announced Tuesday, May 22.
Senior rower Kourtney Beckham, sophomore rower Ashley Johnson, sophomore coxswain Madison Spruell, senior rower Laura Stebbins and senior rower Stacey Young all earned the distinction, giving the Hoosiers five Scholar-Athletes for the first time in program history. Indiana had four Scholar-Athletes in both 2004 and 2005.
Young became a two-time honoree, as she also earned Scholar-Athlete status in 2005. Stebbins was named to the All-Big Ten Second Team this season.
To be named a Scholar-Athlete, each student-athlete must have at least a 3.5 cumulative grade point average, meet all eligibility rules at her institution, be in at least her second year of eligibility and compete in at least 75 percent of her team's spring races or a regional conference meet.
