Hoosiers Close Out Third Round Of NCAA Championship

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - The Indiana women's golf team stand in 24th place after the first 54-holes of the NCAA Championship. The Hoosiers have a team total of 961 (320-318-323) for the tournament thus far. This is the first NCAA Championship appearance for IU since 1998.
"The girls played really hard today," head coach Clint Wallman said. "It was just really a tough day. There was a lot of wind. We got off to a bit of a rough start, recovered well, and the girls did a nice job to try and hold on through the rest of the round."
Leading the Hoosiers is freshman Anita Gahir, who turned in a 78 on Thursday for a three-round total of 238 (81-79-78). She is tied for 93rd at the event. After opening the back nine, her first, with four consecutive pars, Gahir wrapped up the nine with a 3-over total of 39. She again pared her first four holes on the front, but four bogies and one birdie in the closing five holes gave her another 39 for her 6-over total of 78 on the day.
Following Gahir is freshman Kellye Belcher, who has turned in a total of 243 (84-75-84) through the first three rounds, good for a tie for 106th. After an opening-nine 44, with three triple-bogies, on Thursday, Belcher powered through and turned in a 40 on the front nine for her total.
With totals of 245 and sharing 109th position are junior Lauren Harling and freshman Laura Nochta. Harling carded an 80 on Thursday, with a 41 on the back nine and then coming back for a 39 on the front, to go along with an 85 in the second round and an 80 in Tuesday's opening round. Nochta carded an 81 on Thursday to go along with previous rounds of 85 and 79. In the third round, Nochta turned in a 44 on the back nine, but rebounded with a 1-over 37 on the front to close out her 81.
Rounding out the Hoosier lineup is junior Elaine Harris, who has a total of 246 (80-79-87) and is tied for 113th. She had nines of 46 and 41 for her total.
Duke leads the event with a total of 880 (300-287-293), Purdue is second at 888 (303-294-291) and UCLA stands in third with a team total of 893 (303-291-299). Individually, Christel Boeljon of Purdue leads the event with a 6-under-par total of 210 (72-69-69).
The Hoosiers will close out the 2007 NCAA Championship on Friday, May 25. Tee times for IU will begin at 8 a.m. EDT on the 10th hole.
