Rowing Announces Postseason Awards at Team Banquet

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana's rowing program handed out its postseason awards at its fourth annual postseason banquet in the Hoosier Room at Memorial Stadium on Monday, May 7.
Indiana head coach Steve Peterson and assistant coaches Carmen Mirochna and Fran O'Rourke handed out a total of seven team awards and announced which student-athletes were named Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association (CRCA) Scholar Athletes.
Senior Courtney Valerious took home a pair of team awards, as she was named Most Dedicated Athlete and won the Pumping Iron Award. The Most Dedicated Athlete award is chosen annually by the team and given to the person who devoted herself to becoming the best athlete she could be in every workout, both on and off the water.
The Pumping Iron Award, which is new for 2007, is selected by the strength and conditioning coaches and given to acknowledge the student-athlete who most recognizes that preparation leads to excellence in competition.
Senior Elaine Deppe took home the first-ever Academic Award, a new honor selected by the academic support staff to recognize the student-athlete that exemplifies excellence and perseverance while striving to achieve her academic goals.
The Team Sportsmanship Award, given annually to the individual selected by her teammates as best representing the ideals and what it means to be a member of the Indiana rowing program, went to another senior, Rozzie McHenry.
Sophomore Madison Spruell was presented with the Balfour/Hoosier Award, which is given by the IU Department of Athletics to a student-athlete from each sport that has brought honor and distinction to Indiana University.
The Aline Robinson Mental Attitude Award went to freshman Emily Kasavana. The award is given by the IU Department of Athletics to a female student-athlete from each sport that has distinguished herself in athletics and academics, and has displayed an outstanding mental attitude.
The final team honor of the evening was the Most Valuable Rower award, which went to the class of 2010. Selected by the coaches and given annually to the individual who contributed the most to the success of Indiana rowing, the award was given to the entire freshman class this season to honor the achievements of a deep and talented class that has stepped up when needed. Six freshmen row in the Hoosiers' second varsity eight, while eight are in the novice eight, two are in the varsity four and one is in the second varsity four.
Peterson also announced Indiana's 2007 CRCA Scholar Athletes. A program-best five student-athletes earned the distinction, as senior Stacey Young took the honor for the second time in her career and seniors Kourtney Beckham and Laura Stebbins and sophomores Ashley Johnson and Spruell claimed their first career honors.
The Hoosiers wrap up their season at the Aramark South/Central Sprints in Oak Ridge, Tenn., from May 12-13.
