Jones, Bard Qualify for U.S. National Team

Jones placed eighth in the prelims to qualify for the "A" final and took seventh overall with a time of 2:12.83. An incoming freshman swimming for the Terrapins Swim Team, Bard was the top finisher in the "B" final and ninth overall, touching the wall in 2:14.63. Both swimmers also qualified for the 2008 U.S. Olympic Trials. They was joined in the prelims by Amy Harriman who placed 91st (2:24.25).
In the men's race, Ben Hesen (Jeffersonville, Ind./Jefferson) finished 28th with an Olympic Trials qualifying time of 2:04.67. John Koehler (Springfield, Ohio/Central Catholic) swam 2:07.34 in the race, finishing 59th.
The men's 4x100-meter freestyle relay saw the team of T.P. Patrick (Chesterfield, Mo./Marquette), Titus Knight (Austin, Txas/James Bowie), Hesen and Koehler finish 20th with a time of 3:28.77. The women's squad of Kristin Cihoski (Yorktown, Va./Tabb), Marie Smailis (Highland, Ind./Highland), Jones and Britt Epperson (Olympia, Wash./Turnwater/Washington) placed 37th (3:58.09).
Jessica Hill and Amilee Smith (Ellicot City, Md./Howard) competed in the 400 meter individual medley as Smith placed 57th (5:01.70) and Hill 79th (5:10.90).
The men's 100 meter freestyle saw Patrick race to a time of 51.65 (57th), followed by Knight at 54.03 (111th).
In events late Tuesday night, Pat Penoyar (Shelton, Wash./Shelton/Washington) took fourth in the "C" final and 20th overall in the 200 meter breaststroke with a time of 2:18.19. Smith also swam in the "C" final on the women's side, placing 24th overall with a time of 2:37.83.
The men's 1500m freestyle went off with timed heats as Koehler placed 12th with a time of 15:40.16, an Olympic Trials qualifying time. Steffan Troxel (Jackson, Mo./Jackson) was 30th (15:52.78) and Alex Brunfeldt (Lawrence, Kan./Lawrence Free State) 46th (16:06.69).
