BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana University wrestling team wraps up the non-conference slate on Saturday by hosting the Hoosier Quad. Visiting Bloomington for the competition will be Air Force, Gardner Webb and Indianapolis. There will be a round-robin format with two matches running simultaneously. First up for IU is an 11 a.m. match with Gardner Webb, to be followed by the Air Force match at approximately 1 p.m. Lastly, Indiana takes on the Greyhounds of Indianapolis at 3 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT
Indiana comes off their fourth trip to the National Duals and first since 1995. The Hoosiers dropped a pair of heartbreakers in Cedar Falls, Iowa as they led both contests most of the way and were just one individual victory away from winning both matches. First was an 18-22 defeat to #8 Missouri, followed by a loss to #19 Cornell, 19-22.
Kurt Kinser continued his run of destruction, however, inflating his season pin total to 16 by sticking both of his adversaries at the National Duals. Heading into this weekend Kinser is tied with Minnesota's Jayson Ness for the most falls in Division I wrestling. Angel Escobedo also won both of his bouts at the National duals.
ESCOBEDO REMAINS PERFECT
15 up, 15 down for Angel Escobedo in his undefeated 2007-08 campaign. He won his second consecutive Midlands championships and has earned bonus points in nine of 10 dual matches this season, recording three pins, a tech fall, three major decisions and two forfeits.
KINSER's KRUISING
Redshirt freshman Kurt Kinser is on a roll to start this season, racking up a team-high 22 wins and 16 pins thus far. His 16 pins are tied with Minnesota's Jayson Ness for the most in Division-I wrestling. During a 13-match winning streak he put together earlier this season, Kinser stuck 12 of his adversaries in that stretch.
The Bloomington, Indiana native needs just four more falls to surpass Rod Chamberlin's (1981) school record for most pins in a season.
Redshirt sophomore Trevor Perry is also on the brink of putting his name into the all-time record books with his current 10-pin total (ranks 13th nationally), only two slaps of the mat away from the top ten.
GOOSE EGGS
The Hoosiers have posted four shutouts this season in dual matches. They began the season with a 44-0 drubbing at Wabash and picked up their second shutout at the Hoosier Duals, a 50-0 win over the University of the Cumberlands. Indiana then went to the F.I.T.E. Duals and downed Harper College and SIU-Edwardsville 49-0 and 51-0, respectively.
PLAY 2?
After "playing 13" with the Hoosier football team in the fall, John Sandberg will compete in his second sport of the year, joining the wrestling team in early January following his final football game.
