SETTING THE SCENE
• Coming off a successful meet at the Irish Invitational with a first-place finish over Michigan, Notre Dame and Illinois, the Hoosiers continue a tough schedule as they travel to No. 9 Tennessee.
• Indiana is in the home stretch of its regular season with just the Volunteers and a dual at Purdue (Jan. 26) remaining before the conference championship.
NEWS AND NOTES
• Sophomore transfer Kate Zubkova set a a pair of pool records in the backstroke and the Hoosiers recorded 10 NCAA B standards to finish first at the Irish Invitational, Jan. 11-12 in South Bend, Ind.
• The Hoosiers took first with 1108.5 points, followed by No. 13 Michigan (1055), Notre Dame (898.5) and Illinois (442).
• Zubkova led a 1-2 IU finish in the 100-yard backstroke with a pool record and NCAA A time of 54.18. Presley Bard took second in 55.37, an NCAA B time. In the 200-yard back it was an NCAA B cut and pool-record time of 1:58.03 that earned Zubkova a first-place finish. Bard with third (2:01.71) and Amy Harriman ninth (2:07.30).
• Indiana entered the evening session on Jan. 12 with a nearly 100-point lead on second-place Michigan, holding a 762.5-680 advantage. Opening the evening session, Amanda Smith paced the Hoosiers in the 1,650 freestyle with a career best and NCAA B mark of 16:39.59 to finish second. Cassie Luhrsen was third with a time of 16:41.22, also an NCAA B mark.
• Donna Smailis, Kelsey Atchison and Brittany Epperson all scored for the Hoosiers in the 100-yard freestyle as Smailis finished fourth (51.77), followed by Atchison in fifth (52.38) and Epperson seventh (52.95).
• Sarah Stockwell's season-best and NCAA B time of 2:17.81 earned her a third-place finish in the 200-yard breaststroke. Amilee Smith was a fifth-place finisher (2:18.92) and Abby Cooper touched the wall in sixth (2:20.51).
• Allison Kay gave Indiana the sweep in the butterfly events with a winning time of 2:00.83, giving her an NCAA B standard. Christie Fuchs was fifth (2:05.12) and Amanda Smith 10th (2:06.98).
• Indiana added another victory to its totals as Brittney Feldman took the 1-meter diving title with a score of 305.40. Jade Summerlin placed 10th with marks totaling 236.80.
• The day ended with another Indiana victory as Zubkova, Bard, Smailis and Kay touched the wall in 3:26.38 in the 400-yard freestyle relay.
• The morning session began with another IU victory as Zubkova, Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Presley Bard swam an NCAA B cut time of 1:42.18 in the 200-yard medley relay. The 400-yard individual medley followed and Kay took the top spot with a season-best and NCAA B time of 4:17.89. Amilee Smith was sixth (4:27.40) and Stockwell 10th (4:33.42).
• The 100-yard butterfly produced a 1-2 Indiana finish as Zubkova touched the wall in 55.64 and Smailis was second (56.08). Fuchs was also a top-10 finisher with a time of 57.92, good for seventh. Bard continued the win streak in the 200-yard freestyle with a season-best and B standard 1:50.29. Smailis picked up 14 points by placing fifth (1:52.92), followed by Amanda Smith in seventh (1:53.13) and Atchison eighth (1:53.17-season best).
• Stockwell was the top Hoosier finisher in the 100 breaststroke, clocking in third at 1:04.40, while Cooper was just behind with a fourth-place showing (1:04.70). The a.m. session concluded with the 800-yard freestyle relay and the Hoosier lineup of Amanda Smith, Smailis, Kay and Luhrsen took second with a season-best mark of 7:30.71.
• On day one, depth was a difference maker for IU as the team picked up 70 points with first and third-place finishes in the 200-yard free relay. The team of Zubkova, Bard, Brittany Epperson and Kelsey Atchison touched the wall in a time of 1:34.30. Kristin Cihoski, Sarah Stockwell, Abby Cooper and Amanda Smith placed fourth in 1:35.94.
• Indiana claimed six of the top-10 finishers in the 500-yard freestyle, led by Amanda Smith's season-best and NCAA B cut time of 4:47.67. Also hitting a B cut was third-place finisher Allison Kay (4:53.19), while Cassie Luhrsen just missed the mark in fourth (4:55.58). Rounding out the top 10 were Amilee Smith (8th-4:59.18), Christie Fuchs (9th- 4:59.26) and Atchison (5:00.64).
• The Hoosiers went 3-4-5 in the 200-yard individual medley as Zubkova swam a 2:04.31 in her first competition of the season. Bard was fourth (2:04.50), followed by Kay's season-best time of 2:04.97. Donna Smailis (7th- 2:06.24), Cooper (8th- 2:06.61) and Stockwell (10th- 2:07.26) were also top-10 finishers.
• In the sprints it was Cooper leading the IU finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a career-best of 24.01, good for fourth. Epperson was a touch behind at 24.14, with Atchison eighth (24.49).
• The swimming events concluded with the 400-yard medley relay as Zubkova, Stockwell, Smailis and Bard teamed up for a winning time of 3:42.75, an NCAA B time. Indiana also fielded the third place team as Cihoski, Cooper, Kay and Amanda Smith finished in a time of 3:49.99.
• In the diving well, Brittney Feldman was the top IU finisher on the 3-meter board with a fourth-place score of 289.15. Seniors Jade Summerlin and Ashley Green also cracked the top-10 with Summerlin seventh (266.40) and Greene ninth (250.05).
PREVIEWING TENNESSEE
• The ninth-ranked Volunteers are 4-1 on the season with their only dual meet loss coming on Nov. 10 at Auburn, 201-146.
• Tennessee is 1-0 against Big Ten teams with a 220-131 victory over Northwestern on Jan. 5 in Knoxville.
• IU and UT have had one other common opponent this year in Kentucky. IU lost 164-134 to the Wildcats, while Tennessee was a 187-113 winner.
• Head coach Matt Kredich is in his third season at Tennessee. Diving coach Dave Parrington is in his 18th season with the Volunteers.
BIG TENS AROUND THE CORNER
• After this weekend, Indiana has just one more dual meet on Jan. 26 at Purdue before starting preparation for the league championship.
• The Hoosiers are the defending Big Ten champion.
NATIONAL RANKINGS
• After the loss to Kentucky, Indiana dropped out of the national rankings, released Dec. 17.
• They had previously held the No. 24 spot.
• There are currently four Big Ten teams in the top 25, with No. 8 Minnesota, No. 11 Penn State, No. 13 Michigan, and No. 20 Wisconsin.
• As for upcoming opponents, the Hoosiers will face No. 9 Tennessee (Jan. 18).
DRAMATIC DEBUT
• Sophomore transfer Kate Zubkova made quite a splash in her first meet for the Cream and Crimson at the Irish Invitational Jan. 11-12.
• Zubkova set pool records in the 100- and 200-yard backstroke events, including an NCAA A time of 54.18 in the 100. Her time of 1:58.03 in the 200 back is an NCAA B consideration.
• She was also victorious in the 100 butterfly and swam the lead-off leg on the victorious 400 free, 400 medley and 200 medley relay teams.
• The 200 medley relay team of Zubkova, Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Presley Bard set a pool record and recorded an NCAA B time of 1:43.18.
• It is no surprise that Zubkova has found immediate success as she was a member of the Ukranian Olympic Team in 2004 where she finished 28th in the 100 fly and swam on the 400 medley relay team.
ZUBKOVA EARNS BIG TEN, NATIONAL HONORS
• For her performance at the Irish Invitational, Kate Zubkova was named the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week on Jan. 15.
• Zubkova recorded six first-place finishes, including pool records in the 100 and 200 backstroke. Her time of 54.18 in the 100 back was also an NCAA 'A' time.
• Zubkova's performance helped lead the team to a first-place finish over No. 13 Michigan, Notre Dame and Illinois.
• Zubkova was also named the National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week by collegeswimming.com.
