ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana women's water polo team suffered a 13-8 setback at the hands of No. 7 San Jose State on Saturday afternoon in their season opener. The match was the Hoosiers first of four at the Michigan Kick-Off this weekend.
The Hoosiers (0-1) received two goals apiece from Kelly Palmberg, Brooke Zimmerman and Nicole Sands while Maggie Hannon and Kelsey Campbell each scored one to round out the IU scoring.
San Jose State (2-0) took a 4-2 lead after the first period and led 7-4 at halftime. In the third period, They put the game out of reach, outscoring IU 4-1 before the Hoosiers rallied to hold a 3-2 advantage in the final stanza.
"There were about six plays in the game that I would like to have back and we would be right there playing with them," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "For all the newness and unfamiliarity between the freshmen and the veterans, I thought we played very well for the first time out."
For Zimmerman, the goals were her 130th and 131st of her career while Campbell's tally was the first of her career.
The Hoosiers return to action later tonight at the Michigan Kick-Off against Colorado State at 5 p.m.
