SETTING THE SCENE
• The Hoosiers open the 2008-09 season with a home meet against Kentucky at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center.
• Last season the teams met in Lexington, Ky. with the Wildcats posting a 164-134 victory.
• NOTE: Due to a 5K race being run in the vicinity of the aquatics center, fans are encouraged to arrive early.
NEWS AND NOTES
• The Hoosiers look to carry the momentum of last year's 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships.
• IU totaled 128 points, the second-most points scored at the NCAA meet in school history, just off the record of 136 in 2002.
• Indiana returns seven All-Americans in junior Presley Bard, junior Brittney Feldman, senior Christina Loukas, junior Donna Smailis, sophomore Amanda Smith, senior Sarah Stockwell and junior Kate Zubkova.
• The Hoosiers also have eight All-Big Ten selections back in the fold in Bard, Feldman, Kay, Loukas, Smailis, Smith, Stockwell and Zubkova.
• Last season new school records were set in the:

• On the diving side, Indiana returns the Big Ten champion in the one-meter and three-meter springboard in junior Brittney Feldman.
• Also back on the boards for IU this season is senior Christina Loukas. An eight-time All-American for IU, Loukas redshirted the 2007-08 season to focus on the Olympics.
OLYMPIC DREAMS
• Indiana had two athletes and two coaches take part in the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, China.
• Senior Christina Loukas represented the U.S. in the three-meter springboard diving event, while IU head coach Dr. Jeff Huber was a member of the USA Diving staff.
• Junior Kate Zubkova made her second trip to the Olympics, competing in the 100 back, 200 back, 100 fly and medley relay for her native Ukraine. In addition, IU assistant coach Mike Westphal served as a member of the Ukrainian coaching staff.
• Loukas finished ninth with a total of 315.70 points.
• Zubkova placed eighth in her heat and 21st overall with a time of 1:01.25 in the 100-yard backstroke.
• Zubkova also competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter butterfly where she finished sixth in Heat 4 with a time of 58.99. That is a new Indiana record, breaking her previous mark of 59.11 set at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in June.
• Competing in the final heat of the 200 back preliminaries, Zubkova finished seventh in the heat and tied for 22nd overall with a time of 2:12.64. That is the second-fastest time in school history, just under a second shy of her school mark of 2:11.68 set earlier this summer at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational.
DIVING CLAIMS NATIONAL TITLE
• Indiana took home the women's team title, the men's team title and the overall title at the 2008 Kaiser Permanente National Championships in August.
• Senior Christina Loukas successfully defended her national title on the one-meter springboard, while alum Cassandra Cardinell was crowned national champion on the platform.
• Alum Lindsay Weigle also earned the High Point award.
• Junior Amy Korthauer teamed up with Cardinell in the synchronized platform competition, finishing second with 267.30 points.
• Loukas added a second-place finish on the three-meter springboard.
BARD NAMED TO U.S. NATIONAL TEAM
• Junior Presley Bard has been named to the USA Swimming 2008-09 National Team in the 100 backstroke.
• Bard earned the spot with a time of 1:00.92 at the Olympic Trials last June.
2007-08 NCAA RECAP
• The Indiana women's swimming and diving team posted its best finish since 2005 with a 10th-place showing at the 2008 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships held at the McCorkle Pavilion in Columbus, Ohio.
• The Hoosiers brought home a total of 16 All-America certificates, led by five from sophomore Kate Zubkova. In her first NCAA meet, Zubkova finished second in the 200-yard backstroke with a school-record time of 1:53.17. She added a third-place finish in the 100 back with the third-fastest time in school history at 52.02.
• Zubkova also advanced to the consolation final of the 100 butterfly where she finished 16th.
• Zubkova teamed up with Sarah Stockwell, Donna Smailis and Presley Bard to finish eighth in the 200 medley relay (1:39.33) and sixth in the 400 medley relay (3:34.14). Their time in the 200 is the third-fastest in school history, while the 400 time is a new school record.
• Bard joined Zubkova in the 100 back final where she placed seventh with a lifetime best of 53.34. She also earned All-America honors in the 200 backstroke with a 16th-place finish (1:56.46). Freshman Amanda Smith made a splash at her first national meet with All-America honors in the 500 free (4:43.93).
• In the diving well, sophomore Brittney Feldman opened competition on the one-meter springboard with a third-place finish (323.75), then added another All-America certificate on the three-meter springboard when she placed fifth (336.25).
• Senior Christie Fuchs finished 33rd in the prelims of the 1,650 freestyle (17:05.73) and 39th in the 200 butterfly (2:01.08).
• Junior Allison Kay narrowly missed the consolation final in the 400 individual medley with a time of 4:13.74 that was good for 17th. Kay placed 29th in the 200 butterfly (1:59.51) and 44th in the 500 freestyle (4:50.25).
• In addition to her relay duties, Smailis was 39th in the 100 butterfly (54.05), 41st in the 200 individual medley (2:01.58) and 52nd in the 100 freestyle (50.10).
• Smith also competed in the 1,650 freestyle where she finished 23rd (16:27.60), as well as the 200 freestyle (49th- 1:48.40).
• Stockwell represented the Hoosiers in both breaststroke events, placing 24th in the 100 breast (1:02.07) and 29th in the 200 breast (2:15.22).
• Smith, Smailis, Fuchs and Kay combined to finish 20th in the 800 freestyle relay (7:20.47).
• In all, Indiana swimmers posted seven top-20 finishes for their best-ever showing under third-year head coach Ray Looze. It also marked the first time in school history that both the men's and women's teams placed in the top-10 at the NCAA Championships in the same season.
DUAL MEET OF THE WEEK
• SWIMMING World has selected IU's matchup with Northwestern on Oct. 24 as part of its Dual Meet of the Week series.
• This meet will be provided with home page coverage on the SWIMMING World site.
HOOSIERS IN THE POLLS
• Indiana was ranked 22nd in the final College Swim Coaches Association of America (CSCAA) dual meet rankings for the 2007-08 season, released on Feb. 29. Showing the strength of the conference the Hoosiers were fifth among Big Ten teams, behind No. 9 Minnesota, No. 11 Michigan, No. 12 Penn State and No. 21 Wisconsin.
