WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - The Indiana women's golf team sits in fourth place after 36 holes of the Lady Northern Invitational being held at Purdue University Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
Host Purdue is in first with a score of 593 (303-290), followed by Notre Dame (299-303=602), Michigan State (302-302=604), the Hoosiers (306-304=610) and Iowa (313-303=616).
"We played much better in the second round," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We were very patient and picked good targets. Right now our focus is on picking conservative targets but taking aggressive swings."
The tournament concludes Sunday with a single 18-hole round.
Junior Anita Gahir is currently tied for fifth at +5 (73-76). Gahir led the Hoosiers with a 1-over 73 in the first round. Gahir had five birdies in the round but countered that with six bogeys, including back-to-back bogeys on five and six. In the second round she was tripped up with a double bogey on four but came back with a birdie on seven before bogeying nine.
Junior Laura Nochta is tied for 10th with a 7-over 151 on the day (74-77). Nochta was one stroke behind Gahir after 18 holes with a 2-over 74. She had a fairly clean first round with 14 pars and a birdie on 17. Nochta added one birdie on 15 in the second round but shot a six on the par-4 seventh hole and added bogeys on eight and nine.
Junior Kellye Belcher is also in the top 20, sitting tied for 18th with a 9-over 153 (77-76). Belcher carded a 77 (+5) in the opening round. After birdies on four, seven and eight, Belcher headed into the final hole at two over but stumbled with a triple bogey on the par-4 11th hole to finish at 5-over. In round two she went through a rough patch with bogeys on one, three, four and five, but came away with birdies on two, seven and 16.
Sophomore Cecilia Orevik made a major comeback in round two and is tied for 35th (82-75). Orevik struggled in the first round with a 10-over 82. She had a pair of double bogeys but came up with a birdie on 12 and 16 to boost her effort. Round two was a different story with just one double bogey on 17 offset by 12 pars and a pair of birdies.
Senior Amber Lindgren is tied for 74th at +23 (86-81). Like Orevik, Lindgren also had problems over the first 18 holes with a 14-over 86. She recorded three triple bogeys and managed par on just seven holes. An improved performance in the second round resulted in just one double bogey and 10 pars.
"In all it was a solid day on a tough course," Wallman said. "There is always room for improvement and we will keep building upon today's performance."
