WEST LAFAYETTE, Ind. - With the field facing tough, windy conditions, the Indiana women's golf team battled through the final 18 holes for a fourth-place finish at the Lady Northern Invitational held at the Purdue University Kampen Course in West Lafayette, Ind.
The host Boilermakers took home the title with a three-round score of 895 (303-290-302). Michigan State was second (302-302-308=912), followed by Notre Dame (299-303-311), Indiana (306-304-314=924) and Michigan (311-314-312=937).
"This is a tough course anyway, but the conditions today with the wind and temperature made it that much more difficult for everyone," said head coach Clint Wallman. "Overall I feel reasonably good about our play and am optimistic because we finished ahead of some quality teams this weekend."
Despite a weekend-high 81 on Sunday, junior Anita Gahir led the Hoosiers and finished tied for 12th overall at +14 (73-76-81). The round started with a triple bogey on four and was followed by a double bogey on five. Gahir settled down for pars on five of the next seven holes before being tripped up again with a double on 13. Her lone birdie of the day came on the par-5 16th hole.
Junior Kellye Belcher was one stroke behind Gahir and finished tied for 15th at +15 (77-76-78=231). Belcher had birdies on holes 14 and 1 but was dragged down by bogeys on each of the final three holes.
Also finished tied for 15th was junior Laura Nochta (74-77-80=231). Nochta put up a solid round with 12 pars but need a pair of extra strokes on holes nine and 11.
After a rough outing on day one, senior Amber Lindgren bounced back to have the round of the day for the Hoosiers with a 3-over 75 and finished the tournament tied for 50th at +26 (86-81-75=242). Lindgren was -1 after three holes but had drifted up two +4 after a double bogey on 17. That seemed to serve as a wake-up call as she came home with six pars and a birdie over the final seven holes.
Rounding out the IU lineup was sophomore Cecilia Orevik who tied for 62nd at +30 (82-75-89=246). The day began with a triple bogey on six and the extra strokes continued to haunt her with a quadruple bogey on 11 and doubles on 16, 1, 3 and 5.
Indiana concludes its fall season at the Las Vegas Collegiate Showdown, Oct. 27-29.
"I saw a lot of good things out there this weekend and we will carry those positives over as we prepare to head to Las Vegas."
