PRINCETON, N.J. - Indiana's Varsity 8 turned in a 15th place showing in a highly competitive field of 43 boats at the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Oct. 26, in Princeton, N.J.
Comprised of senior coxswain Madison Spruell, junior stroke Molly Sinks, sophomore Mary Kate Murphy, senior Ashley Johnson, senior Jamie Spoto, senior Laura Fuhrmann, junior Emily Kasavana, senior Jen Maslanka and senior bow Kelsey Kapral, the Hoosier crew finished the nearly 3-mile course with a time of 16:01.031, ahead of several top crews.
"One of our goals was to row a very aggressive race and they started out that way great," said Head Coach Steve Peterson. "The first half of the row they did a very good job. Halfway through, they started to run into a lot of boat traffic, and they didn't really handle that well."
Rowing in a borrowed boat with borrowed oars added a new element of challenge for the Hoosiers, along with travel delays that resulted in arriving at Princeton late Saturday night, too late to practice the course. But Peterson was proud of his team for working through less than ideal circumstances.
"There were a lot of things that could have gone against us, but I think they handled it well," said Peterson. "All things considered, I think our rowers did a good job. Beating people like Penn and Cornell is great and it's definitely a sign that we're moving forward. However, I want them expecting more out of themselves, big time. We still need keep stepping things up."
Yale's A boat, the reigning Varsity 8 National Champion, was the top finisher of the day, stroking its way to finish time of 15:12.853. Yale's B boat was not far behind, capturing a second place finish with a time of 15:13.243. Princeton's A boat rounded out the top three with a finish time of 15:18.199.
Next up for the Hoosiers is a trip to Chicago for the Southland Regatta on Sunday, Nov. 2. The regatta will begin at approximately 10 a.m. and will include Big Ten foes Wisconsin, Minnesota, Michigan State and Iowa, along with Notre Dame and Virginia.
