BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University freshman freestyler Nikki White and senior diver Christina Loukas have been named the Big Ten Swimmer and Diver of the Week, respectively, the conference office announced Nov. 25.
White made herself a contender on the national scene with a time of 4:36.61 to finish first in the 500 freestyle at the Hoosierland Invitational. That time is a Big Ten, school and Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center record. It also makes her the seventh-fastest American ever in the event. White's assault on the record book continued over the weekend as she established new school marks in the 200 freestyle (1:46.28) and the 1,650 freestyle (16:07.39), placing first in both events at the meet. With her time in the 500 free, White has already punched her ticket to the NCAA Championships in March.
Loukas was victorious in the three-meter springboard at the Hoosierland Invite, tallying 357.55 points in the final round to take the title by 54.55 points over second-place finisher Brittney Feldman. Loukas was second to Feldman in the one-meter with a final round score of 298.70, but posted the highest score of the day in the semifinals with a 323.35.
The swimmers are off until Jan. 9 when they play host to Michigan, Illinois and Tennesee in a two-day meet at the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center. The divers close out 2008 at the Ohio State Invitational, Dec. 5-7 in Columbus, Ohio.
