BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Four Hoosiers arose victorious in their matches Friday against Ohio State, but the Buckeyes won the overall team score, 20-13.
The match began with the 197-pound bout, and a 3-0 lead for the Hoosiers as Joe Fagiano defeated John Weakley, 6-5. Weakley struck first with an opening round takedown. Fagiano responded quickly, however, earning an escape point and then immediately recording a takedown for the 3-2 after the first period. The Chicago, Illinois native began the second stanza in the down position. He extended his lead to 6-2 with another escape followed by a takedown. From there, Fagiano allowed a reversal and a third-period escape, holding on for the 6-5 victory.
After a decision in favor of Ohio State in the heavyweight match, the Hoosiers jumped back out on top thanks to back-to-back wins by the cousins from Griffith, Indiana. No. 2 Angel Escobedo ran his season record to 21-0 with his fifth major decision of the year. He has recorded bonus points in 13 of his 16 dual match wins.
Next up was a battle between two nationally-ranked opponents in No. 12 Andrae Hernandez and No. 14 Reece Humphrey. Hernandez had to battle back from an early 4-1 deficit to extend the match to a tie-breaker at 4-4. Neither grappler scored in the tie-breaker, forcing overtime. Hernandez rode out his foe for the 30 seconds and could not escape the grasp of Humphrey for the first 28 seconds. With just two ticks left on the clock, Andrae ignited the crowd at University Gym by getting to his feet and earning the win with an overtime escape.
The score was evened up at 10-10 heading into the 165-pound match when the Buckeyes garnered wins in the 141 and 149-pound weight classes. Senior Brandon Becker put IU back on top once again though, defeating Jason Johnstone by a score of 6-2. Ohio State then nabbed the last three bouts to claim a 20-13 win.
Indiana returns to the mat on Sunday for a home match versus Michigan State. Head Coach Duane Goldman will be looking for the 200th win of his coaching career at the 2 p.m. match inside University Gym.
