BOULDER CITY, Nev. - - Carding a 7-over 295 at the par-72 Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev., the Indiana Hoosiers sit in eighth place at the UNLV Spring Invitational.
The host Rebels lead the field at -4 (284), followed by Washington State (-3/285) and San Francisco (+3/291). The teams will play one round on Tuesday and wrap up the tournament with a single round on Wednesday.
"I expect to see us improve with each day," head coach Clint Wallman said. "Each time we hit the course I can see us getting better and better."
Kellye Belcher leads Indiana, posting a 1-under 71 in the opening round. Belcher was at -1 after nine holes. picking up birdies on 12 and 16. Back-to-back bogeys on 18 and 1 put her at even, but another birdie on two had her back at one under par. Belcher bogeyed four, but closed out the round with a birdie on nine to go under for the round.
Belcher is currently tied for ninth.
"Kelly has been hitting and playing well all year," Wallman said. "Parts of her game have been good, but she just had not been able to put it all together for an entire round. Today she was able to put it all together for the duration."
Anita Gahir shot a 73 to sit at +1 entering day two. Gahir, who is tied for 19th on the leader board, had a solid front nine, going one under, including back-to-back birdies on 15 and 16. Her bogeys on one, six and nine were offset by a birdie on five to finish the back nine at +2 (38).
"Anita had some quality shots, she just wasn't able to give herself many birdie opportunities," Wallman said.
Senior Lauren Harling also had a solid outing, shooting 74 for the round (+2). Harling struggled with her game a bit over the first nine holes, posting three bogeys and one birdie. She settled down on the back stretch, shooting an even-par 36.
"Lauren got off to a rocky start but held in there," Wallman said. "Like Anita she hit some quality shots but just wasn't really able to put herself in position for birdies."
Elaine Harris is 5-over with an opening-round score of 77, putting her in a tie for 57th overall. Starting her round on hole 10, Harris was sitting at 2-over after six holes before an eagle on 16 brought her back to even par. The excitement was short-lived as she double bogeyed 17 and carded a five on the par-4 18 to drop back to +3. Another double bogey on one and a bogey on four had her at +6 for the round but she managed to record pars on four of the next five holes, with a birdie on eight.
Laura Nochta also shot a 77 to open the tournament. She birdied holes 11 and 17 over the front nine, but a bogey at 13 and a double bogey at 15 left her at 1-over par. A double bogey on one added two more strokes to her total, but Nochta settled down for pars on the next four holes. After back-to-back bogeys on six and seven, she closed out the round by shooting even on eight and nine.
