Indiana Finishes 11th at UNLV Spring Invitational

BOULDER CITY, Nev. - Buoyed by a 2-under 70 from senior Lauren Harling in the final round, the Indiana women's golf team placed 11th with a three-round score of 889 (295-299-295) at the UNLV Spring Invitational at the Boulder Creek Golf Club in Boulder City, Nev.
Washington State and Brigham Young shared the team title at 5-under (889), followed by a tie for third between Oregon and Texas Tech at +5 (869).
"I think we did okay," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We really had it going there for awhile. We didn't do anything spectacular, but we also didn't make any big mistakes. Our intensity was good, we just need to make more puts."
Harling wrapped up an outstanding tournament with a 2-under 70 and finished the invitational tied for 16th with her score of 216 (74-72-70). Harling got out to a blazing start with seven pars and a pair of birdies over the first nine holes. Another birdie on hole 1 had her at -3, but back-to-back bogeys on three and four brought her back down to one under. The senior finished strong with a birdie on eight and closed out with a par on nine.
"Lauren played really well this entire tournament," Wallman said. "She really seems to like this course, and her game is in great shape. It was only a matter of time before it came around."
Kellye Belcher's 4-over 76 in round three left her tied for 35th for the tournament with a total score of 222 (71-75-76). A solid nine holes saw her saw her shoot a 38 (+2) before she headed down the stretch. Her only birdie of the day came on hole five, but she finished the round with back-to-back pars on eight and nine.
Laura Nochta had her best round of the tournament on the final day, carding a 2-over 74. She finished the tournament tied for 60th with a three-round total of 229 (77-78-74). Nochta was two under after six holes, going one under on 11 and 13. The front nine ended with bogeys on 16 and 18. The back nine saw her par five holes, with a birdie on six.
After a double bogey on the first hole of the day, Anita Gahir settled down to shoot a 75 and placed tied for 42nd with a score of 224 (73-76-75). After the rough start on 10, Gahir bounced back with birdies on 13 and 18 to finish the first nine with a 38 (+2). Her steady play continued on the back nine with pars on eight of nine holes.
Elaine Harris was 4-over (76) on the day to finish with a three-round score of 229 (77-77-76), good for a tie for 60th. Harris started the round strong with pars on seven of the first nine holes of the day. A birdie on two brought her back to 1-over, but back-to-back bogeys on seven and eight, followed by a par on nine, closed out the day.
Playing as an individual, Amber Lindgren closed her tournament with an 81 (+9) and tied for 68th with a score of 232 (73-78-81). Lindgren hit par on 11 holes in the third round but was done in by double bogeys on four a five and came down the stretch with back-to-back bogeys on 16 and 17.
The Hoosiers are back in action next week as they travel to Austin, Texas for the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Club. Play begins on Monday, March 17 and continues through Wednesday, March 19 with a single round each day.
