Indiana Begins Season With Third Place Finishes at Clemson Challenge

CLEMSON, S.C. - The Indiana women's rowing team opened the spring portion of its schedule on Saturday in Clemson, S.C. on Lake Hartwell, wrapping up it spring break trip with a regatta with No. 17 Clemson, Penn, Purdue and Ithaca. Both Clemson and Penn have been on the water a couple of times already this season while the Hoosiers were still coming out of the winter training mindset.
The varsity eight boat of Madison Spruell (So.- cox), Ashley Johnson (Jr.), Mary Kate Murphy (Fr.), Kiri Krane (Sr.), Jamie Spoto (Jr.), Cassidy Bethel-Thompson(Sr.), Ellie Benson (Fr.), Megan Saylor (Fr.), Emily Kasavana (So.), finished third in a time of 7:07.70, behind first place Clemson and second place Penn and ahead of Purdue and Ithaca.
"The varsity eight got off to a difficult start and were trying to come from behind the entire race today," Indiana assistant coach Carmen Mirochna said afterwards. "The lack of water time showed for us today, but it was still a good gauge of where we are and it shows us what we need to work on and we are looking forward to working on those things."
The second varsity eight boat consisting of Monica Idstein (So.- cox), Molly Sinks (So.), Kelsey Kapral (Jr.), Sarah Tinsley (So.), Katie Liston (So.), Nicole Coton (So.), Laura Fuhrmann (Jr.), Jennifer Maslanka (Jr.), Rachel Anderson (Fr.) also came in third with a time of 7:17.53, trailing the same two schools for the top two spots and defeating Purdue and Ithaca.
In the varsity four event, the Hoosiers came in fourth in a time of 8:26.65, behind Penn and two Clemson boats, respectively while defeating the second Penn entry. The Novice eight boat also competed at the regatta and logged also crossed the line in fourth (8:02.3), nearly nine seconds ahead of Ithaca.
Indiana will return home to Lake Lemon to host Louisville on Saturday, March 22.
