AUSTIN, Texas - Blustery conditions and a challenging course tested the Indiana women's golf team on Monday as they carded an 320 (+32) and are tied for seventh after the first round of the Betsy Rawls Longhorn Invitational at the University of Texas Golf Course.
New Mexico is the overall leader at 303, followed by Florida (305), Texas (308), Arkansas (311) and Notre Dame (317). The teams will play single rounds on Tuesday and Wednesday.
"Obviously, I am disappointed with the scores today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "The conditions and the course were challenging, but I felt we had too many compound errors that really cost us. Even with the conditions, we can still try and minimalize those errors."
Despite not playing a practice round due to illness, senior Lauren Harling carded the best round of the day with a 5-over 77 and is currently tied for 11th. Starting on hole 10, Harling bogeyed three holes on the back nine for a 39 over that span. Another bogey on one put her at +4, but she got one stroke back on the third hole before bogeys on seven and nine gave her a +5 for the day.
"Lauren had a solid day out there," Wallman said. "Even though she wasn't able to get a practice round in, she was up to the challenge of the course."
Anita Gahir was next for the Hoosiers with an 80 (+8) and is tied for 33rd. The day started out rough for the sophomore as she found herself 6-over after nine holes. She was able to settle down on the back nine with a 38 on the par-36. One stroke back from Gahir is Laura Nochta with an 81 (+9). Currently in tied for 43rd, Nochta was even over the first five holes thanks to a birdie on 13, but double bogeys on 16 and 18 upped her score to +5 (41) heading into the final nine holes. Pars on one and two seemed to get her back on track, but another double bogey was the result on three. She managed to par two of the final three holes.
Kellye Belcher is tied for 52nd with a 10-over 82 after 18 holes. Belcher was also hindered by a pair of double bogeys on six and seven, along with a dreaded triple bogey on 15. She did record back-to-back birdies on holes four and five.
Rounding out the group, senior Elaine Harris is currently tied for 80th. While Harris did record the shot of the day with an eagle on five, Harris' score was hampered by shooting an 11 on the par-5 14th hole, taking her score from +1 to +7. Despite her struggles, Harris did record pars of 10 of 18 holes and finished with an 87 (+15) for the day.
"We have to realize there are certain things we can't change and we need to make good decisions when things don't go the way we want them to," Wallman said.
