Hoosiers Down Dayton, Eastern Michigan on Lake Lemon

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Just as they had the Saturday prior, the Indiana women's rowing team had to battle mother nature as well as the other schools on the water of Lake Lemon. This time the Hoosiers were able to come away with victories in the two Varsity Eight boats before conditions force the rest of the regatta to be cancelled.
In the Varsity Eight, Indiana posted a time of 8:39.1 into a stiff headwind while Dayton was five seconds behind at 8:44.1. Eastern Michigan brought just its Varsity Eight boat and struggled in the conditions, finishing over a minute behind Indiana.
The Hoosiers controlled the Second Varsity Eight race the entire way and extended their lead at the end to cross the finish line in 8:40.6, with Dayton posting a time of 9:21.1.
"We had looked to row a much more aggressive race this weekend," Indiana head coach Steve Peterson said, "and in the past few practices we have really been doing a great job of it. But we didn't do that today. The rowers were really focusing on trying to row technically well in these extremely difficult conditions, and that coupled with all of the waves and water that came into the shell during the warm up and race, made for a very heavy and sluggish stroke. To take on and beat national caliber crews we have to row much more aggressively, like we are in practice."
The Varsity Four, Novice Eight and Novice Four races were all cancelled as safety was becoming a concern for the rowers.
"The frustrating part is that between the bad conditions for our races over the past two weekends," Peterson continued, "as well as the lack of water time for practice, the crews really haven't had good conditions on race day to truly show what they can do. Hopefully when we take on Michigan St and Miami this coming weekend up in Lansing Michigan the conditions will allow us to do that."
