ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana women's water polo team fell for the second time in as many days at the Eastern Championships, dropping a 14-10 decision to the Brown University Bears on day two at the tournament being played on the campus of the University of Michigan. The Hoosiers will now play Mercyhurst on Sunday at 9:00 a.m. in the seventh place game.
Indiana (19-16), the third seed at the tournament, took a 5-4 lead after the first eight minutes of play in a wild first period. Brown (15-15) took a quick 1-0 lead only to see Kelly Palmberg and Maggie Hannon post goals to give the Hoosiers a 2-1 lead. After Brown came back to tie the score, Palmberg and Zimmerman found the back of the goal to give IU a 4-2 lead but the Bears evened it at 4-4 before Zimmerman added her second of the period to put the Hoosiers in front, 5-4.
The second period belonged to the Bears, as they outscored the Hoosiers by a 3-0 margin to take a 7-5 lead into the intermission.
The Hoosiers tried to mount their comeback early in the second half when Zimmerman completed her hat trick just 19 seconds into the half. From there, Brown began to pull away by scoring the next four goals to take a commanding 11-6 lead before Kelsey Campbell scored just before the end of the third to make it 11-7.
Maggie Hannon scored twice and Brittany Estrada added a goal in the third period but by then Brown had the game in hand.
Zimmerman's hat trick gives her 76 goals scored this season, tying the Indiana single-season record she set last season.
