ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The Indiana women's water polo team fell to the Maryland Terrapins, 13-11, in the first game for both teams at the Eastern Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich. Kelly Palmberg scored four goals to lead pace the Hoosiers.
Indiana (19-15) took an early 2-1 lead on goals by Palmberg and Brooke Zimmerman but the Terps rallied for five more goals in the period while Zimmerman added her second of the stanza to bring IU to within 6-3.
In the second period, the Hoosiers scored the first two goals to get to within one goal at 6-5 but Maryland outscored them over the remainder of the period to take a 9-7 lead into halftime.
The Hoosiers once again cut the lead to one on Maggie Hannon's third period goal but Maryland had the answer yet again to extend to an 11-8 lead with just eight minutes remaining. Kelsey Campbell and Nicole Redder both scored goals in the fourth but it was too little too late and the Terps claimed the 13-11 win.
Katie Carson made four saves in goal for the Hoosiers while Maryland's Ashleigh Jobson stopped 15 shots to get the win.
Indiana will take on Brown University at 5:00 p.m. Saturday, looking for a win to advance to the Fifth Place match on Sunday.
