BELLEVILLE, Mich. - The Indiana women's rowing team finished seventh at the Big Ten Championships on Saturday at Lake Belleville in Belleville, Mich. The Michigan State Spartans were crowned conference champions with 150 points, 36 points ahead of Wisconsin in second place. The Hoosiers had three sixth place finishes on the day, led by a strong performance by the Second Varsity Eight.
The Hoosiers had boats entered in four of the six events at the championships and all four advanced to the petite finals after their morning races. In three of the four races, the Hoosiers defeated Iowa, a team they had lost to two weeks ago.
"Because we only had four boats entered, we were just trying to focus on the individual events," head coach Steve Peterson said. "The two Varsity Four boats beat Iowa and the Second Varsity Eight was within a boat length of Michigan so those are all improvement from the last time out."
The Second Varsity Eight lost to Iowa in the morning race by over 10 seconds, but in the petite final, the Hoosiers came back to defeat the Hawkeyes by just over two seconds with a time of 7:02.54 to take sixth place, and was with in five seconds of Michigan.
"The 2V8 was only a boat off of Michigan, who is a historically fast program," Peterson said. "The new lineup we had in there in the morning really learned a lot and rowed together well in the afternoon. This was a big step forward for that crew."
In the Varsity Eight Petite Final, the Hoosiers posted a time of 6:54.18 to finish third in the race behind Iowa and Wisconsin, and seventh overall. The Second Varsity Four finished with a time of 8:33.90 in their Petite Final for sixth place, 45 seconds ahead of Iowa. The First Varsity Four also defeated Iowa in the Petite Final to claim sixth place with a time of 8:11.13.
The Hoosiers finished in seventh place with 31 points, just behind Iowa in sixth place and 40 points.
Senior Kiri Crane was named First Team All-Big Ten following the Championships and Emily Kasavana received Second Team accoladeds. Kasavana was also Indiana's Sportsmanship Award honoree by the Conference.
Indiana returns to the water in two weeks, May 17-18 at the Aramark NCAA South/Central Regional in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
