BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana Hoosiers will be well represented at the 2008 U.S. Olympic Diving Trials with four current and former Hoosiers among the 26 women vying for a slot on the U.S. Olympic Teams. The trials take place June 18-22 at the IU Natatorium in Indianapolis.
Current Indiana divers Christina Loukas and Amy Korthauer will be joined by IU alums Cassandra Cardinell and Lindsay Weigle at the trials. Loukas will vie for a spot in the three-meter competition, while Korthauer, Cardinell and Weigle will compete on the platform.
The platform competitions begins on June 18, with the semifinals set for June 20 and the finals on June 22. Loukas begins competition on the three-meter springboard on June 19, with the finals on June 21.
Cardinell is looking to make her second Olympic team after finished seventh in the synchronized platform competition with fellow Hoosier Sara Reiling-Hildebrand at the 2004 Olympics in Athens.
Loukas redshirted the 2007-08 collegiate season to focus on earning an Olympic spot. Over the past year she performed well at several national and international meets, including winning the one-meter title at the 2007 Kaiser Permanente National Championships and a silver in the three-meter and bronze in the three-meter synchronized at the 2007 World University Games. Loukas also took fourth on the three-meter springboard at the Good Luck Beijing/FINA Diving World Cup in Beijing, China in February.
Korthauer just completed her sophomore season with the Hoosiers, finishing fourth on the platform at the NCAA Zone C Diving Championships and contributing a pair of top-15 finishes on the platform (ninth) and three-meter springboard (12th) at the Big Ten Championships.
Weigle completed her eligibility at Indiana in 2007. In her senior season she finished in the top 10 in all three events at the Big Ten Championships, placing second on the platform, fourth on the three-meter and sixth on the one-meter. She went on to finish second on the platform at the 2007 NCAA Swimming and Diving championships with a score of 356.55 that ranks second in Indiana history.
Indiana women's diving has been represented in each of the last two Olympic games, with Hildebrand competing in 2000 and 2004, and Cardinell and Kimiko (Hirai) Soldati earning spots at the 2004 games.
