BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - - Indiana University newcomers Kate Zubkova and Amanda Smith added their names to the IU annals with several record-breaking performances over the weekend at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in Omaha, Neb.
Zubkova, who just completed her first season with the Hoosiers, became the school's new record holder in the 100-meter backstroke, 200-meter backstroke and 100-meter butterfly. She took nearly a second off the old 100 back record with a time of 1:00.86. Her time of 2:11.68 in the 200 back is more than a full second faster than the old mark of 2:12.83 set last August by Ashley Jones. Her most impressive performance came in the 100 fly where she shaved more than two seconds off the old mark, recording the two fastest-times in school history of 59.11 and 59.32. Zubkova is currently preparing for the 2008 Beijing Olympics where she has qualified to represent her native Ukraine.
Smith, who is entering her sophomore season at Indiana, set a new school record in the 400-meter freestyle with a time of 4:15.91. Over the weekend Smith also recorded a time of 4:16.57 in the event, giving her the two fastest times in school history.
Several IU swimmers will be back in action June 29-July 6 at the U.S. Olympic Swimming Trials being held at the Qwest Center in Omaha, Neb.
