BEIJING - Indiana University junior Kate Zubkova competed in her second event at the 2008 Olympics, taking part in the women's 100-meter backstroke preliminaries Sunday night at the Water Cube in Beijing, China. Zubkova is representing her native Ukraine at the XXIX Summer Games.
Competing in the fifth of seven heats, Zubkova placed eighth in her heat and 21st overall with a time of 1:01.25. That is the second-fastest time in school history, just behind her mark of 1:00.86 set earlier this summer. Russia's Anastasia Zueva won the heat with a then-Olympic record time of 59.61. That record would be lowered in each of the next two heats, with Zimbabwe's Kirsty Coventry entering the semifinals with the top time of the day at 59.00
Only the top 16 swimmers advanced to Monday morning's semifinal.
Zubkova also competed in the preliminaries of the women's 100-meter butterfly on Saturday where she finished sixth in Heat 4 with a time of 58.99. That is a new Indiana record, breaking her previous mark of 59.11 set at the Mutual of Omaha Swimvitational in June. Zubkova did not advance to the semifinals.
A total of seven athletes with Indiana ties are competing at the 2008 Olympic Games. In addition to Zubkova, Hoosier senior Christina Loukas will compete in the three-meter diving competition on Aug. 15.
