BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana women's rowing team announced their 2008-09 schedule on Monday, Aug. 18. Head coach Steve Peterson and the Hoosiers open the season on Saturday, Sept. 27 with the Lemonhead Regatta in Bloomington.
"The fall is basically our preseason," Peterson said. "For the returning members of the team, the training and racing is focusing on the physiological and technical preparation for the spring racing season. Since rowing is primarily an endurance sport, the majority of the training we do in the fall is long distance mileage, averaging 12.5 miles in each workout."
Following the fall-opening regatta, the Hoosiers will take their top crew to the world's largest two-day rowing event, when they travel to the Head of the Charles on Sunday, Oct. 19, in Boston, Mass. The event features more than 7,500 athletes from around the world competing in 55 different race events.
"Anyone who has ever rowed knows the Head of the Charles is the race of the fall," Peterson said.
IU opens the month of November at the Cal-Sag Collegiate Challenge in Chicago, on Sunday, Nov. 2. The Hoosiers close the fall portion of the schedule with their Fall Intra-Squad Class Race Classic in Bloomington on Saturday, Nov. 8.
"With our returning student-athletes, we have a solid foundation to go along with our strong incoming recruiting class of 12 solid student-athletes who are going to challenge them for the spots in our top crews," said Peterson. "That sort of intra-squad competitiveness should create a great training environment to bring out the best of all of our student-athletes."
Following the Hoosiers' winter training trip to Tampa, Fla., on January 3-10, Indiana will open the spring season with its annual early season scrimmage against Wisconsin on Saturday, Feb. 28 in Bloomington. IU opens March with its spring break training trip to Clemson, S.C., on March 14-21, which concludes with an event against Clemson on March 21. The Hoosiers' next event at home will put them against Buffalo and Eastern Michigan on Saturday, March 28. The following day, IU will head to Indianapolis for the Indiana Invitational to face in-state rivals Notre Dame and Purdue.
Indiana opens the month of April with the Dale England Cup in Bloomington on Friday, April 3-Saturday, April 4. On Friday, the Hoosiers will compete against the University of Pennsylvania before taking on Louisville and Michigan State on Saturday. Following an event vs. Minnesota and Ohio State in Columbus, Ohio, on April 11, Indiana will close April with the Southern Intercollegiate Rowing Association Championships on April 18-19 in Oak Ridge, Tenn.
"The highlight of our home races will definitely be the inaugural Dale England Cup regatta on April 3-4," Peterson said. "The four crews competing will race three times over two days to determine who will take home the cup."
The championship portion of the season begins on May 2 with the Big Ten Rowing Championships in Columbus. The Aramark NCAA South/Central Region Sprints follows on May 16-17, returning the Hoosiers to Oak Ridge. The season concludes with the NCAA Championships on May 29-31.
"Obviously, the focus of our season will be the Big Ten Championships and our NCAA Central Region Championships in May," Peterson added. "How crews perform at those regattas determines who will get selected to compete at the NCAA Championships."
