VERONA, Wis. - - The Indiana University women's golf team is in fifth place after two rounds of the Badger Invitational at University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis.
California leads the field with a two-round score of 593, followed by Wisconsin (602), Minnesota (604), College of Charleston (609) and the Hoosiers (306-304=610). The tournament concludes Sunday with a single round.
"We did a lot of really good things and were pretty solid," head coach Clint Wallman said. "We gave ourselves some opportunities but didn't quite cash in. We are in a good position to move up the leaderboard and the girls are looking forward to it."
Anita Gahir shot identical rounds of 73 over 36 holes and is currently tied for fifth at +2 (73-73=146). In round two Gahir opened with a birdie on two but dropped to one over after back-to-back bogeys on four and five. She had a birdie on seven and another on 11 but a bogey on 16 put her at +2 until she ended the day with a birdie on one. Gahir was also the leader after round one with a 1-over 73. The round was highlighted by birdies on holes nine, 12, 13 and 17, but she was tripped up with double bogeys on four and the round-ending first hole. Gahir also shot a five on the par-4 18th hole.
Kellye Belcher is tied for 24th with a 10-over 154 (77-77). After a pair of bogeys Belcher climbed back to 1-over with two shots on the par-3 eighth hole and combated bogeys on nine and 10 with another birdie on 12. She remained at +2 in the second round until bogeys on three of the final five holes left her at five over. Belcher started out strong in the first round and was at 1-under par after five holes. A bogey on six brought her back to even but she would pick up five more bogeys to come home with a 77 (+5).
Laura Nochta is just one stroke behind Belcher at 155 (78-77) and is tied for 27th. Her second round was a relatively clean one with pars on 14 of 18 holes. Nochta was a +3 through 17 holes before a double bogey on 18 added two strokes. In round one, Nochta was +3 after the first nine holes (39) but shaved one stroke off her total with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole. The trouble for Lindgren began on the 10th hole with a double bogey, and that was followed by double bogeys on 11, 13 and 14. Lindgren regained her composure for pars on the final five holes. In round one, Lindgren pared the first hole in round one before reeling off bogeys on five of the next six. back-to-back bogeys on 12 and 13 put her at +7 but she came back with a birdie on 14 and balanced a bogey on 15 with a birdie on 17 to finish at 6-over (78) for the round.
