VERONA, Wis. - The Indiana University women's golf team recorded a three-round score of 920 to finish sixth at the Badger Invitational held Sept. 27-28 at the University Ridge Golf Course in Verona, Wis.
The Hoosiers closed out tournament play with a 310 on Sunday, following rounds of 306 and 304 on Saturday. California won the event at +25 (889), followed by Wisconsin (+38; 902), Minnesota (+44; 908), College of Charleston (+48; 912) and Tulane (+51; 915).
"We started out strong through the first 12 holes, then ran into problems on 17," said head coach Clint Wallman. "We put a couple of balls in the water and lost our momentum."
Junior Anita Gahir was the top IU finisher, placing tied for fifth with a 4-over 220 (73-73-74). On Sunday Gahir had a steady round with pars on 14 of the 18 holes. Her lone birdie of the day came on the par-3 eighth hole, but she was felled by bogeys on nine, 12 and 14.
"Anita continues to get better with each event," Wallman said. "She did not have her `A' game this weekend but the type of player she is, she still put herself in a spot to be in the hunt for the title. She made good shots and good decisions. That is what good players do."
Junior Laura Nochta tied for 22nd with a three-round score of 230 (78-77-75). Nochta's best round of the tournament came on Sunday. She was able to overcome double bogeys on holes one and 17 with three-straight birdies on 11, 12 and 13. Bogeys on four and 14 left her at 3-over par for the day.
Junior Kellye Belcher tied for 32nd this weekend with an 18-over tally of 234 (77-77-80). Belcher opened with three straight bogeys but came back with five pars and a birdie over the next six holes. A bogey on 14 and a triple bogey on 17 brought her score to six over and she added bogeys on 18 and four to finish the day with an 8-over 80.
Senior Amber Lindgren shot an 81 on Sunday and finished tied for 50th (78-81-81=240). Lindgren carded double bogeys on 13 and 17 but recorded pars on five of the final six holes to end on a positive note.
Sophomore Cecilia Orevik tied for 55th at +26 (83-77-82=242). Orevik had six pars on holes 10-18 but was tripped up with double bogeys on 14, 17 and 18. Another double bogey on hole four had Orevik at 11 over for the round but she finished the day with a birdie on the par-5 sixth hole.
Freshman Sara Poppas finished 65th playing as an individual, recording her best round of the weekend on Sunday with an 80 to finish at +38 (90-84-80=254). Poppas carded double bogeys on four holes but finished strong with a birdie on six, just her second birdie of the weekend.
The Hoosiers are back in action Oct. 18-19 at the Lady Northern Invitational in West Lafayette, Ind.
"Over the next three weeks we will take a look at reducing our compound errors," Wallman said. "That will be our focus, along with being more efficient with our shots. If we can do that, we will get where we want to be."
