Indiana Finishes Second at Quad Meet

The Indiana women's swimming and diving team wrapped up its first competition of 2009 with the final session of the Indiana Quad featuring Tennessee, Michigan, Illinois and the Hoosiers.
Tennessee finished first with a score of 1,454, followed by Indiana (1,294.5), Michigan (714) and Illinois (186.5).
Amanda Smith was the top IU finisher in the 1,650-yard freestyle, finishing the event in 16:57.22 for second place. She led the way for six-straight Hoosier finishers with Allison Kay third (17:02.27), Nikki White fourth (17:06.17), Amilee Smith fifth (17:07.44) and Cassie Luhrsen sixth (17:11.20). Rounding out the group was Brittany Strumbel who recorded a season-best time of 17:11.42 for seventh.
Zubkova made it a sweep of the backstroke events with a time of 1:58.35 for victory in the 200-yard backstroke. Ashley Jones was fourth with a time of 2:02.11 and Donna Smailis rounded out the top eight, coming home in 2:05.58.
Margaux Farrell was the fastest Hoosier in the 100 freestyle with a time of 51.76 for eighth place. Strumbel was 11th (52.28), followed by Courey Schaefer in 12th with a season-best time of 52.36.
A battle between Sarah Stockwell and Tennessee's Samantha Gelb in the 200-yard breaststroke resulted in a win for Stockwell as she surged over the final 10 yards to finish in 2:17.68. Abby Cooper was eighth (2:20.79), followed by Amilee Smith in ninth (2:21.01). Jacquie Ward went a season best in 2:24.45 to win the first heat.
In the final individual event of the day, Brittany Barwegen touched first in 1:59.94, the only swimmer in the event to go under two minutes. Amanda Smith was fourth (2:04.09), and Kay tied with Tennessee's Jamie Saffer for eighth (2:05.62).
The meet concluded with the 400-yard freestyle relay with Indiana a fourth-place finisher as Smailis, Farrell, Zubkova and Kay posted a time of 3:29.75. The team of Jones, Stockwell, Barwegen and White was seventh (3:32.81).
