BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team will compete in the 2009 Princeton Chase on Lake Carnegie on Sunday, Oct. 25 in Princeton, N.J.
The 3-mile chase is an invitational head-race hosted by the Princeton University crew coaching staff for men and women collegiate crews.
"With respect to results for this coming weekend, I will always say we are rowing/training to win," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "Otherwise to me there is no reason to go to a race. However, what determines if this was a successful outing or not, is did we execute our race plan correctly and row the way we are capable of in race. If we do that, we should improve on last year's results ... and that is always the ultimate goal for our team. Improvement. At this race this weekend, we will be facing some of the fastest collegiate crews in the country, and we do not know if they have gotten faster or slower since last year ... so being able to race them early in the year like this is a great experience for our athletes, and great feedback for our staff as to how our training is going."
Women's racing is slated to begin at 11 a.m. ET with the Varsity 8+ race, followed by the Novice 8+ at 12:30 p.m. and the Varsity 4+ at 3:30 p.m.
"We are very excited about this race," Peterson added. "It is the first real race we do each year and obviously everyone gets excited about that. Our hopes and expectations are high ... and that is all we can ask for. Now it is time to take those goals and expectations and perform on race day."
Following the Hoosiers trip to Princeton, IU will compete in a scrimmage against Notre Dame in South Bend on Sunday, Nov. 1.
