Fesenko Named National, Big Ten Swimmer of the Week

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After an outstanding season-opening performance at Northwestern where she set two pool records, senior Kate Fesenko was named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week, as well as the Big Ten Swimmer of the Week, it was announced Tuesday.
Fesenko helped lead the Indiana women to a season opening 156-144 win at Northwestern on Friday. She posted individual victories in each of her three events, including two pool records and two NCAA B cuts.
Fesenko took the 100 back in 53.71 which is an NU pool record and an NCAA B cut. She then claimed the 200 back crown in 1:56.10, also a pool record and an NCAA B cut. She closed out the day with a victory in the 100 fly, posting a time of 54.73.
Fesenko also swam lead-off backstroke on the winning 200 medley relay, posting a 50-yard backstroke split of 25.55 as the team finished in 1:44.21. It is the second time in her career that Fesenko has been named the Counsilman-Hunsaker National Collegiate Swimmer of the Week. Her last Big Ten Swimmer of the Week honor came in October 2008.
The Hoosiers return to action this weekend (Oct. 30-31) as they head to Austin, Texas to take on both Texas and Michigan.
