BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The 2008-09 Indiana Volleyball banquet was held Saturday night (Feb. 7) inside the Hoosier Room in Memorial Stadium. Student-athletes, coaches, staff, family and fans gathered Saturday evening to celebrate the accomplishments made during the '08 season, enjoy some food, present awards and have a little fun.
After eating dinner and viewing the 2008 IU Volleyball Highlight video, the awards portion of the evening began with Ashley Benson, Kelsey Hall, Martyna Popik and Taylor Wittmer receiving gifts as second-year players. All first-year letterwinners were also recognized as Mary Chaudoin, Caitlin Cox, Hayley Koetter, Jessica Weeg and Lexie Woodson were issued their IU varsity jackets.
In addition, seniors Juli Pierce, Erica Short and Emily Zulauf each received senior gifts and addressed the crowd at the podium. Short prepared a written speech, which was read by the master of ceremonies, Jeremy Gray. She was unable to attend because she is currently playing professionally in Puerto Rico.
Pierce and Popik picked up additional accolades at the banquet as well. Pierce was the Inspiration Award winner, voted on by her teammates. The 'players' "inspirational" award' is given strictly by the players and is someone that throughout the season inspired others to give their best through their actions both on and off the court.
Meanwhile, Popik was the staff's choice for the Coaches Award, which is given to the person who exemplifies exactly what it means to be a true student-athlete.
