RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico - The Indiana women's golf team battled through a wet and windy round to move into a tie for 14th after the second round of the Lady Puerto Rico Classic in Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
Indiana posted a 311 on Monday and boasts a two-round score 629 (318-311), putting it in a tie with Northwestern. Host Purdue leads the tournament at 592 (304-288), followed by Georgia (302-300=602), TCU (302-301=603) and NC State (310-300=610).
"It was sloppy out there with the rain, and then the breeze picked up later in the day," said head coach Clint Wallman. "The conditions were tough, but not as tough as yesterday. It is a challenging course for all the players."
Junior Laura Nochta remains tied for first with a 2-over 74 on Monday to give her a two-round score of 146 (72-74). She is currently tied with Maria Hernandez (Purdue), Prisela Campbell (TCU), and Lauren Doughtie (NC State).
Juniors Kellye Belcher and Anita Gahir showed marked improvement in round two as each shot a 5-over 77 and are both tied for 55th with two-round totals of 160. The pair cut six strokes off their first-round scores of 83 to help move Indiana into a tie for 14th.
"Kellye and Anita came back and played a lot better today," Wallman said. "That is no surprise because of the type of players they are. As they play more rounds, they are gaining confidence. I expect tomorrow their numbers will be even better than today."
Senior Amber Lindgren is tied for 70th after recording an 11-over 83 on Tuesday (80-83=163). Sophomore Cecilia Orevik posted an 88 in the second round and holds a two-round total of 172 (84-88).
"Tomorrow we will try to tighten things up and limit the mistakes that have cost us," Wallman said. "This group is capable of posting the low round of the day, and that will be our focus tomorrow."
The tournament concludes with 18 holes on Tuesday.
