KANE'HOE, Hawai'i - After one round of competition, the Indiana women's golf squad sits in eighth place at the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane'hoe Klipper Golf Course in Kane'hoe, Hawai'i.
The Hoosiers shot a 21-over 309 over the first 18 holes and are currently 12 shots off the lead with Idaho sitting in first at +9 (297). Play continues Tuesday with another round of 18.
"The course is a bit wet as there has been a lot of rain recently, but the greens are perfect," said head coach Clint Wallman. "The course was scoreable, but a bit breezy which is why you saw higher scores from everyone. We just need to settle down and play our game."
Junior Laura Nochta is currently tied for seventh with a 2-over 74. Nochta shot a 37 on the front nine and came home with another 37 over the final nine holes.
"I think Laura got the most out of her round today," Wallman said. "She wasn't at her best hitting the ball, but she played as well as she could with what she had today. Sometimes you are on and sometimes you are off, you just have to play through it and she did that today."
Junior Kellye Belcher is tied for 22nd with a 6-over 78. She started out with a 36 over the first-half of play and finished with a 42 on the back nine.
Junior Anita Gahir is also tied for 22nd with a 78 in round one. Gahir shot a 37 for the first nine holes, followed by a 41.
Senior Amber Lindgren is one stroke back and tied for 27th with a 79 (+7). Lindgren opened with a 40 and improved that by one stroke with a 39 down the stretch.
Competing in her first road competition, sophomore Lauren Giesecke had a solid day with an 85 and is tied for 54th. Giesecke shot a 40 on the front nine and finished with a 45.
"This wasn't the start we were looking for," Wallman said. "We made a couple of compound errors, but nothing we can't bounce back from. We will be in good shape and I think we can come out tomorrow and post a good number."
