KANE'HOE, Hawai'i - The Indiana women's golf team matched its first-round score with an identical 309 but moved up one spot to seventh place after day two of the Dr. Donnis Thompson Invitational at the Kane'hoe Klipper Golf Course in Kane'hoe, Hawai'i.
The Hoosiers are at +42 (309-309=618), 20 shots behind leader Idaho (297-301=598). Kansas State is second (305-301=606), with Texas A&M third (306-301=607), Nevada fourth (303-306=609) and Osaka Gakuin fifth (303-311=614).
The tournament concludes Wednesday with a single 18-hole round.
"This is a course where if you are not clear about what you want to do, you can make bogeys fast," said head coach Clint Wallman. "If you combine poor execution and poor strategy, then you can be in for a really bad day. This course can really penalize you if you are not diligent in what you want to do."
Junior Laura Nochta is just five shots off the lead with a 75 on Tuesday to bring her to 149 (74-75) for the tournament. Junior Kellye Belcher had her best round of the tournament to date with a 75 and is tied for 16th at 153 (78-75).
"Kellye and Laura really got it around today while not playing their best," Wallman said. "Laura has quietly put herself in a good position to make a run at the tournament title."
Junior Anita Gahir is tied for 19th after a round of 77 on Tuesday. That brings her two-day total to 155 (78-77). Senior Amber Lindgren is currently tied for 42nd at 161 (79-82), and rounding out the Hoosier lineup is sophomore Lauren Giesecke in a tie for 57th (85-85=170).
"Our goal tomorrow is to take care of our own business on the course," Wallman said. "We need to focus on a game plan and hope to climb into one of the top four spots."
