St. LOUIS, Mo. -
Defending champion Angel Escobedo suffered his first loss at the NCAA Championships since 2007. He lost by, literally, a matter of seconds. Second-seeded and undefeated Troy Nickerson of Cornell held a 1:22 advantage in the riding time column, giving him the extra point that proved to be the difference in the 2-1 win.
The match did not end without some drama, however. First, Nickerson garnered all of his riding time in the third period, a period in which he was warned for stalling. Escobedo was then able to get away for the match-tying escape with less than 30 seconds remaining. At the 13-second mark, Escobedo took a shot and landed in deep on a single-leg at the edge of the mat. Nickerson was able to scramble out of bounds as time expired though to seal the deal.

Escobedo's next match will be against the winner of the Brandon Precin (Northwestern) and Scotti Sentes (Central Michigan) match. That bout will take place Saturday morning.
Trevor Perry's run at the NCAA Championships came to end Friday night after a long stretch that saw the Davison, Mich., native come up just one bout shy of becoming an All-American. Perry faced Penn State's Quentin Wright for the third time this season in the round of 12, dropping a 4-3 decision. The match was very similar to Escobedo's as a riding time bonus point decided the final outcome once again.
Wright stuck immediately with a takedown just three seconds into the contest. Perry then battled back, however, evening the score at 3-3 late in the third period when Wright was eventually called for a stalling penalty. But in the end, Wright's 1:12 edge in the riding time earned him the victory.

Angel Escobedo (25-3) advanced to the semifinals with an 8-1 win over Minnesota's Zach Sanders; and is set to take on second-seeded Troy Nickerson of Cornell in Friday's evening session. Nickerson brings an unblemished 23-0 record to the table.
Escobedo jumped ahead of Sanders quickly, nailing a picture-perfect double-leg takedown in the first period. The Griffith, Ind., native then added an escape and second takedown the following period to go ahead 5-0 entering the final frame. Sanders elected to start in the neutral position, and paid the price for his decision. Escobedo stamped takedown number three of the match for the 7-0 advantage. Sanders lone point of the match came on a stalling call with just seconds remaining in the bout.
Trevor Perry (29-16) has advanced to the 'round of 12,' needing just one more win to guarantee himself a spot on the All-America stand. He began Friday by out-lasting No. 10 Kurt Brenner (West Virginia) for a 5-4 decision in the first tiebreaker. Perry's takedown in overtime proved to be the difference in the final score.
He then followed that up with a 12-4 major decision over Iowa State's Ryan Burk. Perry hit several slide-by's in the match and posted five takedowns.
Perry's next opponent is Quentin Wright of Penn State. Perry and Wright split a pair of meetings earlier this season.
As a team, the Hoosiers are in 18th place with 22.0 points after Session Three.
