TUCSON, Ariz. - Led by stellar third-round play from juniors Anita Gahir and Laura Nochta, the Indiana women's golf team wrapped up the Mountain View Collegiate with a fourth-place finish, tallying an 884 for the 54-hole tournament at the Mountain View Golf Club in Tucson, Ariz.
San Jose State took the team title with an 866 (284-287-295), followed by UNLV (291-287-297=875), Louisville (292-295-292=879), the Hoosiers (297-298-289=884) and Missouri (301-295-289=885).
The story of the day for IU was the play of Gahir, who finished just one stroke off her personal best with a 68 to close the tournament with a 213 (71-74-68), putting her in a tie for third place. Gahir's score was just one off the tournament record which was set Sunday by Kansas State's Abb Sunner with a 67.
"Anita was very good today," said head coach Clint Wallman. "She has been poised to have this kind of round, birding five of her first seven holes. I could see this coming as I watched her play over the last couple of weeks and this will be a big confidence booster heading into our tournament."
Sharing the third-place spot with Gahir was Nochta, who posted a 2-under 70 in the final round to also finish at 213 (72-71-70). Nochta now has a team-best eight rounds of par or better to her credit this season.
Junior Kellye Belcher posted a 4-over 76 in the final round and finished tied for 44th at 228 (75-77-76). Senior Amber Lindgren had her best round of the tournament on Sunday with a 3-over 75 and finished tied for 60th (79-77-75=231). Sophomore Cecilia Orevik went 7-over par today (79) and placed tied for 84th (82-76-79=237).
The Hoosiers get a break from their travel schedule as they return home to play host to the IU Invitational, April 6-7 at Otter Creek Golf Club in Columbus, Ind.
"We are excited about our tournament and the remainder of the year," Wallman said. "Mountain View has always been a good course for us. This year the field was very strong, so to post a low round today will give us a boost for the remainder of the season."
