ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (8-6, 3-0 CWPA West) continued their stellar conference play with a 15-2 victory over Grove City. The win marks the seventh consecutive victory for the Hoosiers, and keeps them unbeaten in the CWPA Western Division.
In a trend that continued all day for Indiana, the Hoosiers jumped out to an early lead and never looked back. Indiana established a comfortable lead in the opening quarter, and then played a controlled style throughout the final three periods.
"I liked our effort in all three games today," Indiana head coach Barry King said. "We received solid contributions from many different players."
Indiana reeled off five goals just prior to the midway point of the first quarter, with four of those scores coming from sophomore Lauren Wyckoff. Wyckoff led the Hoosiers for the game with a career-high five goals, and it marked the second straight contest in which she scored at least three in the opening period.
The first goal came thirty seconds into the action when sophomore Nicole Redder delivered an entry pass that Wyckoff turned and fired into the net. Wyckoff then scored off a deflection, and followed that up with a tap-in off of a pass from sophomore Amy Moore.
Redder got ahead of the pack and connected to put the Hoosiers up 4-0 with just under six minutes remaining in the first quarter. Shortly after, Grove City got on the scoreboard with a put-back goal. Wyckoff once again had an answer with a post up score to make it 5-1. Grove City would then knock in their final goal of the game on a long range lob.
Junior Nicole Sands made two key assists and scored one goal in the final 2:28 of the first quarter. Sophomore Kate Dunn and freshman Dana Mayeron were on the receiving end of those passes, which gave the Hoosiers an 8-2 lead heading into the second period.
The rest of the game featured rock solid Indiana defense, to go along with a methodical offense.
Junior Katie Carson and freshman Cassie Wyckoff shared goalkeeping duties once again, with Carson starting the game and making five saves, while allowing two goals. Wyckoff also tallied five saves in the second half of action.
Freshman Jakie Köhli scored at the beginning of the second quarter, when fellow freshman Kristin Harmidy found her with a pass to the weak side. Harmidy would then get a goal of her own, after freshman Lisa Andrews made one of her team-high four steals and passed ahead to Harmidy for the score. Minutes later, Moore made a steal and found Wyckoff on a two on one for her fifth score to give Indiana an 11-2 lead at halftime.
Sophomore Kara Butler was the highlight of the third period, scoring two goals. The first score coming on a put-back during a six on five opportunity for the Hoosiers. She followed that up with a five meter penalty shot conversion.
Freshman Hanna Eimstad and Andrews wrapped up the Indiana scoring with goals in the fourth quarter. Eimstad scored on a Hoosier power play, and Andrews connected from deep after an assist from freshman Sara Joseph.
The Hoosiers wrap up their weekend with a CWPA battle against Penn State Behrend on Sunday at 10:00 a.m. ET.
