ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (9-6, 4-0 CWPA West) women’s water polo team won their eighth straight game, defeating Penn State Behrend, 14-0. The Hoosiers jumped out to another quick lead in the first quarter, going up 7-0 after one period and never looked back.
Freshman Kristin Harmidy led the Indiana scoring attack with three goals, and junior Nicole Sands added two scores.
“I thought we focused and did things that we had to do,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “This weekend was a nice start to conference play, and we will look to keep getting better.”
Freshman Sara Joseph had a terrific first half for Indiana, tallying one goal, three assists, and three steals. She also added a team-high fourth assist in the second half.
The Hoosier defense swarmed PSU-B in the first half allowing a total of two shots on goal. Freshman Cassie Wyckoff made the start at goalie, while junior Katie Carson played the second half making six saves as the Hoosiers relaxed their defensive pressure with the game In hand.
Indiana’s first quarter scoring barrage was started by sophomore Kara Butler connecting on a post-up goal less than a minute into the game. Freshman Megan Jacobs then converted a two on one after an assist from Joseph, for her first career goal to give Indiana a 2-0 lead. Joseph followed that up with a nifty steal that she took the distance for a goal.
The remainder of the first period included tough Hoosier defense, and goals by sophomore Kate Dunn, Harmidy, and both of Sands’ scores to give Indiana a 7-0 lead.
Indiana used the shot clock and executed a ball-control offense for much of the remainder of the game.
The Hoosiers would get on the board again in the second quarter with freshman Lisa Andrews scoring on a give and go with Joseph. Indiana would then take advantage of a six on five chance with a goal by freshman Hanna Eimstad after a Sands assist, which gave the Hoosiers a 9-0 cushion.
The lone third quarter goal was scored by freshman Allison Silver, after she converted on a pass from Butler.
Harmidy took control in the fourth period with two goals. The first score came from the post position after an entry by sophomore Kelsey Campbell, and the second was a goal on a Hoosier power play. Sophomores Amy Moore and Nicole Redder hooked up for another Indiana goal, when Moore passed to Redder in the post to give the Hoosiers a 13-0 lead.
Sophomore Lauren Wyckoff wrapped up the Hoosier scoring with a six on five goal with less than minute remaining after a feed from Joseph. Wyckoff finished the weekend with a team-high 11 goals for the Hoosiers.
Indiana will be back in action on March 14-15 in the Loyola Marymount Tournament in Los Angeles, Calif. The Hoosiers opening game will be against Cal State Bakersfield at 10:50 a.m. PT.
