ANN ARBOR, Mich. - The No. 18 Indiana Hoosiers (6-6, 1-0 CWPA West) defeated Washington & Jefferson, 14-1, in their first CWPA Western Division contest of the season. The Hoosiers launched an 11 goal onslaught in the first half to put the game well in hand.
“I thought we played well and got off to a great start,” said Indiana head coach Barry King. “We did what we needed to do to win the game on both ends.”
Sophomore Nicole Redder led the way for Indiana with three goals. Fellow sophomores Kara Butler and Lauren Wyckoff notched two goals for the Hoosiers.
The Indiana scoring attack started just over a minute into the game with Wyckoff connecting from the center position after a feed from freshman Jakie Köhli to give the Hoosiers a lead that they would not relinquish. Redder then scored the next two Hoosier goals, both coming from Wyckoff assists. The first quarter was capped off when junior Nicole Sands found freshman Allison Silver ahead of the pack, and Silver converted for her first collegiate goal to give Indiana a 4-0 lead.
The Presidents had no answer for Indiana’s overall team speed, as the Hoosiers were able to get behind the Washington & Jefferson defense consistently.
The Hoosiers poured it on in the second quarter, scoring seven goals, including two by Butler. Freshman Sara Joseph scored her first goal as a Hoosier when she nailed a five meter penalty shot late in the second period.
Freshman Dana Mayeron tallied two of her team-high three assists in the second quarter, the first on a cross pass to Köhli and the second to Butler for a goal with one second remaining to give the Hoosiers an 11-0 lead at the break.
Indiana took their foot off the pedal in the second half, mainly focusing on ball control. The Hoosiers committed just five turnovers in the game, while grabbing 14 steals. Sophomore Kelsey Campbell led the way defensively for Indiana with three steals.
Washington & Jefferson got on the board in the third quarter with a goal from long range. Indiana followed that up with two goals later in the third, and one in the final period.
Katie Carson and Cassie Wyckoff each played a half at goalkeeper. Carson finished with three saves and no goals allowed in the first half. Wyckoff tallied seven saves, while allowing one goal in the second half.
The Hoosiers will be back in action at 1:30 p.m. ET against Chatham, followed by a game against Grove City at 6 p.m. ET.
