IU Rowing Places Seventh at 2009 Big Ten Championships

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Indiana Rowing team placed seventh with 24 points in the 2009 Big Ten Championships at the Griggs Reservoir on the Scioto River in Columbus, Ohio.
The Big Ten boasts six top 20 teams, including three ranked among the top 10 in the nation according to this week's Collegiate Rowing Coaches Association/USRowing poll. No. 3 Michigan State won the Big Ten title with 137 points, No. 5 Michigan took second with 126 points and No. 7 Ohio State finished third with 123 points.
"We did a good job in the morning races against a very tough field," said IU head coach Steve Peterson. "I thought this morning the results were not bad. We raced well and closed the margin very well against Michigan State and Minnesota. The afternoon was a little disappointing in the finals. We just lacked a lot of energy."
Saturday's championship opened with the Hoosiers competing in five pieces. IU's Second Novice 8 highlighted the morning's competition with a second place finish in its heat with a time of 6:53.039, defeating Iowa (3rd, 6:57.091) with Wisconsin winning with in 6:45.705. Indiana's second place finish earned the crew a spot in the Grand Final. In the First Novice 8 race, the Hoosiers finished fourth with a time of 6:54.123, behind Wisconsin (1st, 6:28.167), Michigan (2nd, 6:30.117) and Minnesota (3rd, 6:36.635). The Hoosiers' Varsity 4 also placed fourth with a time of 7:36.407, behind Wisconsin (1st, 6:58.389), Michigan (2nd, 7:00.303) and Iowa (3rd, 7:14.983). The Second Varsity 8 crew finished fourth in 6:28.969, just missing third place as Minnesota crossed the finish line in 6:28.665. Michigan State placed first in 6:18.457 and Michigan finished second in 6:21.777. In the 11th heat of the morning, the Hoosiers' First Varsity 8 crew finished fourth with a time of 6:27.399, behind (Michigan, 1st, 6:09.913), Michigan State (6:13.577) and Minnesota (3rd, 6:21.533). All Indiana teams finishing fourth earned spots in the afternoon's Petite Finals.
The Hoosiers Second Novice 8 crew placed fourth in its Grand Final with a time of 6:51.941, behind Wisconsin (1st, 6:36.547), Michigan (2nd, 6:36.645) and Michigan State (3rd, 6:47.921). Indiana took bronze in its final four races. In the First Novice 8 Petite Final, IU placed 3rd with a time of 6:46.740, behind Minnesota (1st, 6:36.950) and Iowa (6:38.404). The Hoosiers placed third as their First Varsity 4 crew crossed the finish line in 7:40.813, behind Michigan State (1st, 7:08.081) and Iowa (2nd, 7:17.901). IU's Second Varsity 8 crew finished in 6:42.766 for third, just behind Iowa (1st, 6:34.492) and Minnesota (2nd, 6:38.160). In its final race of the day, Indiana's First Varsity 8 crew placed third in 6:37.678, following Iowa (1st, 6:18.872) and Minnesota (2nd, 6:19.726).
Senior co-captain Ashley Johnson earned First Team All-Big Ten honors, while sophomore Rachel Anderson earned Second Team All-Big Ten accolades. Junior Sarah Tinsley was Indiana's Big Ten Sportsmanship honoree. She is now eligible for the Big Ten's annual Sportsmanship Award, which is selected at the end of the school year.
Indiana returns to action on Saturday, May 16 when they travel to Oak Ridge, Tenn., for the Aramark NCAA South/Central Region Sprints.
