BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University is calling for all interested young women to try out for the novice rowing (walk-on) team for the 2009-10 school year. Call out meetings will be held Tuesday, Sept. 1 from 6:30-8 p.m. in the Oak Room and Wednesday, Sept. 2 from 6:30-8:30 p.m. in the Dogwood Room of the Indiana Memorial Union. If you cannot attend or you have questions you may also contact Coach Josh Adam at joadam@indiana.edu.
Do I need experience?
No. Experience is not necessary. In fact a large percentage of the team has never rowed prior to enrolling at IU. At the practices, we will teach you all of the proper bio-mechanics and technique involved in our sport, as well as work with you to increase your strength and endurance to prepare you for the excitement of Big Ten Racing.
What is required?
We are looking for individuals with a willingness to learn, a desire to have fun, and the determination to push the limits of their personal, athletic potential. What type of woman makes a good rower or coxswain? Physiologically, we look for taller athletic women to be rowers and smaller quick thinking leaders to be coxswains. Psychologically, we seek women of strong character; meaning you are self-confident, like to be challenged, and are eager to learn.
What do I do if I know I want to join?
A) Make sure that you have had a full physical and Complete Blood Count (CBC) within the last few months. If you have completed, or you can get the physical and lab work done before you arrive, then please being a copy of all the paperwork with you to IU.
B) Please bring a copy of your medical insurance.
C) Get yourself registered! Registering with the NCAA Eligibility center is not necessary at first; but, all members of the team must register to be eligible to race. Here is the website to register: web1.ncaa.org/eligibilitycenter/common/index.html.
And, D) although this phrase could go without being stated, get ready to have a lot of fun, make friends and create memories that will last the rest of your life.
