BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - With the game knotted 1-1, sophomore Corey Brautigam scored the game-winner with three minutes to play to give the No. 17 Indiana field hockey team a 2-1 win over Ball State in the Hoosiers' home-opener. Freshman Brooke Borneman scored the Hoosiers' (5-2) first goal in the first half.
Indiana came out aggressively in the first half with a corner three minutes into the game. At the 4:42 mark, junior Kelsey Kiper drove the ball from the middle and shot it down the left side of the goal to Borneman who got it in the goal behind Ball State's goalie to give IU a 1-0 lead. Both teams battled each other on shots for the remainder of the first half. The Cardinals (2-3) tied the score at 1-1 at the 43:02 mark as Brooke MacGillivary scored in front of IU's Alex Mann in goal. The score remained tied until the 67:10 mark when senior Meg O'Connell got the ball off of a rebound from a shot taken by redshirt freshman Morgan Fleetwood to send it to the right side of the goal for Brautigam to score the game-winner, 2-1.
Borneman took four shots on the game, while Brautigam took two. Redshirt sophomore Brenna Moeljadi and Fleetwood each took a team-high six shots, and Kiper and O'Connell each tallied an assist. Freshman Julia Raymakers recorded a defensive save at the 35:52 mark. Mann played in goal for the Hoosiers and tallied one save in 70:00 minutes.
The Hoosiers outshot the Cardinals 25-9 and recorded 12 corners to BSU's three.
