BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - The Indiana rowing team opened the fall schedule with races in the Lemonhead Regatta at Lake Lemon on Saturday, Sept. 26.
In the Collegiate 4+ race IU's crew of Jaclyn Riedel, Katie Feckler, Cara Donley, Mel Clement and Lisa Coleman crossed the finish line in 20:32 to finish third just behind two of Louisville's crews (1st, 19:35; 2nd, 20:02). IU also had a crew of Katie Liston, Andrea Wensits, Ellie Benson, Kaitlin Honson and Hillary MacBain placed fourth with a time of 20:44, beating out the Cardinal's fifth place crew that recorded a time of 21:08. The Hoosiers final crew of Amy Gartenberg, Sarah Taylor, Jennifer Schultz, Rebekah Niedner and Alex Burkle took sixth with a time of 21:40, beating Louisville's final crew that finished in seventh with a time of 21:45.
"We definitely needed to come in with a little more attitude in the fours race if we expected to beat Louisville and we didn't really do that," said head coach Steve Peterson. "Louisville is a very good team and it was going to take our best effort to beat them. I do think given the limited time we have had in the fours, as well as, in these lineups also had something to do with our results, but those are things our athletes need to deal with and still perform regardless of the obstacles we face. Our athletes have been working extremely hard and should be confident in that work, and that should give them the confidence on race day no matter who their opponents are. However, that is what the difference was today. Louisville came in confident and expecting to win, while we thought we could win - and that makes all the difference. The good thing is, as they continue to train, especially as hard as they have been, the confidence will come."
The Hoosiers had two crews in the Collegiate 8+ race and took first and second. IU's first place crew of Honson, Liston, Sara Leigh, Benson, Amanda Rogers, Courtney Luthman, Taylor, Riedel and Coleman, crossed the finish line in 19:28. Indiana's second crew of Feckler, Donley, Wensits, Shields, Robinson, Koewler, Connor, Moody and Amy Coleman, finished in 19:32.
"After the races we had a chance to talk as a group and the athletes learned a lot from the races," Peterson added. "So although we all came into this wanting and expecting to win, I am not disappointed in their effort one bit. They really raced hard and put everything out there, and most importantly they learned some important things from this first race. Now the key is for the athletes to take what they learned and apply it to practice on Monday and every day from here on out, especially the next time we are on the race course."
The Hoosiers will send its Varsity 8 crews to the Princeton Chase on Sunday, Oct. 25, in Princeton, N.J., before competing in the Southland Regatta at Fay's Point in Chicago on Sunday, Nov. 1.
