BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - Indiana University sophomore Nikki White is one of 12 female swimmers invited to participate in the USA Swimming National Open Water Select Camp this June. In order to be invited to the camp an athlete must have achieved one of the 12 fastest times in the 1,500-meter freestyle between Jan. 1 and Dec. 31, 2009.
The camp will take place June 2-5 in Long Beach, Calif. USA Swimming seeks to identify the best distance swimmers, offering them a unique motivational and educational experience. The National Open Water Camp is viewed as an integral step for athletes to move from the pool to open water and compete on the international scene.
"It is a tremendous honor for Nikki, her family, and Indiana University to be invited to this National select camp," said head swimming coach Ray Looze. "Nikki is one of the premier distance swimmers in the U.S. and this is certainly evidence of that distinction."
The camp will coincide with the USA Swimming 10K Open Water National Championship on June 5, and the 5K Open Water National Championship on June 6. All camp athletes will be registered in the 10K competition. Athletes will have the opportunity to qualify for the Open Water World Championships in Roberval, Quebec, Canada (July 17-23) and the Open Water Pan Pacific Championships in Irvine, Calif. (August 22).
