BLOOMINGTON, Ind. - After a successful start to the 2010-11 season with wins over Northwestern and Kentucky last weekend, the Indiana women's swimming and diving team will be put to the test this Friday and Saturday as Texas and Michigan come to the Counsilman-Billingsley Aquatic Center for a double dual meet on Friday and Saturday.
The meet will be split into three sessions, with the lineup following that of a Big Ten or NCAA meet. The first session begins at noon on Friday, Oct. 29, followed by the second session at 6 p.m. The meet wraps up on Saturday, Oct. 30 at 10 a.m.
In the noon session the teams will swim the 200 free relay, 500 free, 200 individual medley, 50 free and the 400 medley relay. The women's 3-meter springboard diving event will also take place at that time. At 6 p.m. competition will take place in the 200 medley relay, 400 individual medley, 100 butterfly, 200 free, 100 breaststroke, 100 backstroke, 800 free relay and 1-meter springboard. Saturday's events will be the 1,650 free, 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly, 400 freestyle relay and platform diving.
Indiana blew through its competition last weekend, winning 13 of 16 events against both Northwestern and Kentucky. Senior Brittany Barwegen clocked an NCAA B cut in the 200-yard butterfly against Northwestern, while sophomore Taylor Wohrley was victorious in the 100-yard backstroke in both meets and junior Allysa Vavra took the 200-yard breaststroke title both days.
In the diving well, junior Gabby Agostino was the winner of the 3-meter springboard competitions at both events, while freshman Laura Ryan won her first collegiate title with a win on the 1-meter springboard against Northwestern. After missing last season due to injury, Brittney Feldman won the 1-meter springboard against Kentucky.
The Hoosiers face a Michigan team that is 1-1 on the season with a win at Toledo and a loss to conference foe Minnesota. Michigan finished third at last year's Big Ten Championships, behind the Hoosiers and Golden Gophers. Senior Natasha Moodie is undefeated in the 50- and 100-yard freestyle events this season, while junior Amanda Lohman swept the 1-meter and 3-meter events at Toledo.
The Longhorns are 1-0 on the season after an impressive 156-144 win over 2009 NCAA Champion California. Last year Indiana was defeated by Texas 222-162 at this same event in Austin but the Hoosiers went on to post a 10th-place finish at the NCAA Championships, with Texas coming in one spot behind in 11th. Sophomore Laura Sogar was the national swimmer of the week last week after winning both breaststroke races against the Golden Bears, including breaking her own school record in the 200-yard breaststroke.
The Hoosiers will return to action Nov. 19-20 when they travel to Charlottesville, Va. to take on Virginia and Penn State in a double dual meet.
